ChatGPT has learned a new trick: it can now turn a simple sentence — or a still photo — into an animated GIF. OpenAI announced the upgrade, called ChatGPT Images 2.6, on 4 November 2026, and it is rolling out to users around the world, including on the free tier.
The update is more than a ChatGPT GIF maker. OpenAI says image generation is now 50% faster than before, characters and products stay consistent across edits, and developers get two new image models — GPT-Image-2.6 Flare for speed and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst for detail. With people now generating more than 4 billion images a week across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, up from 3 billion in September, motion was the obvious next step.
ChatGPT GIF: From a Prompt or Photo to a Moving Image

Until now, ChatGPT could only produce still images in a single step. Images 2.6 changes that: ask for an animation in words, or upload a photo, and ChatGPT returns a looping ChatGPT GIF. You can then change how fast it plays and edit individual frames before sharing it on repeat.
OpenAI’s own demonstration starts with a request for a dancing-cat GIF — and ChatGPT produces the animation straight away. A basic doodle is enough to become an animated character for a video or a game. Marketers can animate a brand mascot for a campaign, online sellers can make a product photo play on repeat, and anyone can make their own reaction GIFs and memes. Animators can also plan character movement with animated storyboards before shooting any video.
There are limits worth knowing. ChatGPT can revise a GIF it created, but it cannot edit an animated GIF you upload. And because the feature is still rolling out, the new controls may not have appeared in every account yet — if you cannot see them, check again over the coming days.
50% Faster Images, Plus Two New Models for Developers

Speed is the other headline of the release. Images 2.5, launched in September, was already claimed to be 50% faster than Images 2.0; Images 2.6 claims another 50% step on top of that. OpenAI says the weekly total across its products now exceeds 4 billion images.
For developers, the API gains two new models. GPT-Image-2.6 Flare is built for speed: it can create an image in as little as six seconds on its low-quality setting, and it arranges posters and product images more neatly. GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst focuses on detail, producing sharper images that stay consistent across edits on medium or high quality.
The API also gains image markup, which lets developers highlight the exact area they want changed, plus SVG export for use on websites, apps and in print, and a new “complexity” setting that controls how much planning the model does before generating. GIF output through the API runs from 2 to 64 frames at 20 to 2,000 milliseconds each; the default is nine frames of 200 milliseconds — a 1.8-second loop.
Reference Images: Your Character Stays the Same

One of the most practical additions is reference images. You can now keep reference images of yourself, your pet or a character saved in ChatGPT and reuse them without uploading them again.
That matters because AI image tools have a habit of changing a character’s face after a small tweak. OpenAI says Images 2.6 keeps characters, products and brand elements looking the same across multiple edits. For anyone building a mascot, a comic character or a consistent product look, that consistency is arguably as useful as the ChatGPT GIFs themselves.
What the Update Means for Users in Pakistan

Images 2.6 is available globally in ChatGPT and Codex on desktop, mobile and the web, across subscription tiers including the free tier, according to OpenAI. For users in Pakistan that means the GIF tool costs nothing extra to try: a small business can animate a product photo for a WhatsApp status or Facebook post, a student can turn a sketch into a moving character, and social media users can make their own reaction GIFs instead of searching for one.
Our ChatGPT features and pricing guide explains the plans and tools available in Pakistan. And as with any AI image tool, the results are best treated as a starting point: a ChatGPT GIF is a short, repeating loop, not a replacement for a full video — but for memes, product posts and quick animations, it removes the need for a separate editing app entirely.
