Punjab Starts Distributing 100,000 Electric Bikes to Students Today — Phase 2 Begins 5 November

The Punjab government announced that the distribution of the bikes would begin on November 5 and starts handing over 100,000 electric bikes to students today, 5 November 2026, under Phase 2 of the Punjab E-Bike Scheme — one of the largest student mobility programmes in the country’s history. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced in October that distribution will begin on 5 November 2026, telling students that a larger share of the bikes has been reserved for female students.

The scheme drew an overwhelming response: more than 1.2 million students registered, with over 600,000 applications received before the application window closed on 4 October 2026. Students who do not know how to ride a motorcycle will also get two days of free riding training through district police and traffic departments.

Under Phase 2, selected students do not have to make any down payment. The Punjab government is providing a Rs 90,000 subsidy on each bike, and the financing carries no interest — the scheme is being offered through interest-free instalments so that students from middle and low-income families can afford their own ride.

With demand far outstripping the 100,000 bikes on offer, selection will be made through a ballot. Students should watch for official notifications on the scheme’s portal about ballot results, financing documents, and collection or delivery arrangements. The official portal for the scheme is bikes.punjab.gov.pk, where all programme information and application updates are published. (Read: how to apply online at bikes.punjab.gov.pk)

The chief minister has repeatedly said that female students will receive a larger share of the 100,000 bikes — a deliberate push to give young women independent, affordable transport to colleges and universities. Addressing a ceremony in Sahiwal, Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the scheme is meant to make students, particularly girls, more independent in travelling to educational institutions.

Students who cannot ride will not be left behind: at least two days of free riding lessons will be provided through district police and traffic departments, so every selected student can use their bike safely from day one.

The e-bike distribution is part of a wider youth package. Maryam Nawaz Sharif has declared 2026 the “Year of Youth” for Punjab, headlining the announcement alongside the annual distribution of 100,000 laptops and an equal number of Honhaar scholarships from next year.

On the public transport side, the fully electric Green Bus service will keep its fare at just Rs 20 despite recent increases in petrol and diesel prices. The service currently runs 700 buses and will be expanded to 3,000 buses over the next six to eight months, reaching every tehsil in Punjab — with free travel for women, students, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
