After eight years of silence, the next Elder Scrolls game finally has a name. Bethesda Game Studios has officially titled its long-awaited sequel The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, revealing the title on 3 November 2026 at the end of a video celebrating the studio’s 40th anniversary. For a fanbase that has waited since a 30-second teaser at E3 in June 2018, it is the first concrete news about the game in years — and the clues bundled with the reveal point firmly towards Hammerfell, the desert homeland of the Redguards. There is still no release date, no confirmed platform list and no gameplay footage, but after nearly a decade of rumours, the Elder Scrolls VI Sentinel reveal gives players something real to talk about at last.
How Bethesda revealed the Sentinel name
The announcement came at the close of “Celebrating 40 Years of Bethesda Game Studios”, an anniversary video hosted by executive producer Todd Howard from the studio’s home in Bethesda, Maryland. The video looks back across four decades of the studio’s history, from its earliest games through Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, before turning to the future. Howard then unveiled the new title, and Bethesda followed up with a separate 65-second Official Name Reveal trailer. The short teaser shows desert sand blowing across the screen until a magical-looking Elder Scroll rises out of the dunes, followed by the line: “Embark on your next journey to Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.”
Bethesda’s message to fans was warm but careful. “Thank you for 40 years of shared memories. We can’t wait to make even more together with The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you,” the studio said in a post on X. That last phrase matters: Bethesda described the reveal as covering both the name and the location, which is the studio’s clearest hint yet about where the game will take place.
What Sentinel tells us about Hammerfell
Sentinel is not a random word. In Elder Scrolls lore it is one of the great port cities of Hammerfell, on the province’s northwestern coast near the Iliac Bay, and the homeland of the Redguards. The teaser’s sandy, dune-filled imagery fits Hammerfell’s deserts, and the province has been the subject of fan speculation for years — ever since the original 2018 teaser showed a rugged, mountainous coastline that players tried to match against the map of Tamriel. Reports ahead of the announcement had already pointed to Hammerfell, with The Verge’s Tom Warren reporting that the game would be set there, and the reveal’s own imagery backs that reading.
The choice would give Bethesda a very different canvas from Skyrim. Hammerfell stretches from scorching deserts to coastal cities, which could allow for more varied environments within a single province than the snowbound north of the last game. Fans have previously visited the region in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and in The Elder Scrolls Online, but a full mainline game set there would be a first. Bethesda has not yet confirmed how much of the map the game will cover, or whether neighbouring regions such as High Rock will feature, so the exact boundaries of the playable world remain open.
The 4E 206 teaser and the history of the Elder Scrolls
The reveal trailer ends with a short piece of in-world writing that may be the most intriguing detail of all. Attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, and dated 4E 206, it reads: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” That date places the game five years after the events of Skyrim, which was set in 4E 201 — so Sentinel appears to be a direct sequel in the timeline rather than a prequel, as some fans had speculated. The mention of a moth priest, a keeper of the Elder Scrolls, is also telling.
According to reporting by The Verge, Sentinel will be the first Elder Scrolls game to explore the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, uncovering the secrets of the mysterious ancient artefacts that give the series its name. Bethesda has not confirmed any story details, and the teaser passage is deliberately cryptic, but a game built around the scrolls — rather than treating them as background lore — would be a meaningful shift for the series. The name itself was widely guessed before the reveal, after Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma said in August that she had seen the game and teased its subtitle, and fans worked out that it was Sentinel.
No release date yet — and the wait could run past 2028
For all the excitement, Bethesda showed no gameplay and gave no window for the next update. The studio has confirmed that the game is its main development focus and that it is being built on Creation Engine 3, the technology platform developed since Starfield’s launch, which will also power the next mainline Fallout game. But players hoping for a launch date will have to keep waiting: Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has said the game is still more than two years away, an estimate consistent with his earlier view that it was at least two to three years from release, which would place it in late 2028 at the earliest.
The timing of the reveal is no accident. It lands just before the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which launched on 11 November 2011 and remains one of the best-selling games of all time, still being re-released across new platforms a decade and a half later. It also arrives in November 2026, the month Xbox marks its 25th anniversary. For now, fans can watch the anniversary video and the name-reveal trailer, and wait for Bethesda to say more — something the studio has warned will take some time. After eight years, though, the Elder Scrolls VI Sentinel reveal at least gives the wait a name, a place and a date in Tamriel’s history. Read more about how far away the game still is.
