Netflix has officially ordered a new live-action Stranger Things prequel, taking one of the biggest shows in streaming history back to the 1950s. The series, Stranger Things Other Worlds, was announced on Friday, 6 November — Stranger Things Day — and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2028. The full title is Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, and it will be the first live-action spin-off from the flagship series that began in 2016.
Stranger Things Other Worlds will be set in the 1950s, decades before the events of the original show, in a new town with a new cast of characters. A short teaser released with the announcement gave fans their first clues: the words “April 19, 1955… Marion, Nevada” appear on screen, followed by a crack of thunder and the year 2028. Netflix has kept plot details and casting under wraps for now, but the message is clear — Hawkins is behind us, and a much earlier chapter of the story is about to open.
What we know about the new series so far
Stranger Things Other Worlds leaves Hawkins, Indiana, behind entirely. The story unfolds in Marion, Nevada, in 1955, around 30 years before Will Byers went missing in the original series. It also takes place before the events of the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is set in Hawkins in 1959 and explores the troubled past of Henry Creel, the character who eventually becomes Vecna.
According to Netflix, the prequel will explore mythology introduced in The First Shadow and in the final season of Stranger Things, including the mysterious rock that Henry discovers. The Duffer Brothers have stressed that the series will feature new characters, new themes and new mythology, rather than simply revisiting familiar faces. As Polygon reported, the show will take the franchise to “a new location and a new time period”, with a new cast of characters facing supernatural terrors of their own.
Who is making the prequel
The series is co-created by Kate Trefry and the Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer, who created the original Stranger Things. Trefry has been part of the show’s creative team since its second season and wrote the stage play The First Shadow; she will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer on the prequel. The team behind Stranger Things Other Worlds also includes Shawn Levy, who returns as an executive producer, and 21 Laps Entertainment, the company behind the original series.
BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning director Joe Wright, known for Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes and executive produce. Production is set to take place in New Mexico, which will stand in for 1950s Nevada. Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada, said the show “takes us to the 1950s with new heroes and all the heart, mystery, and spectacle of the original series”. As JoBlo reported, Trefry will showrun the series while the Duffers remain closely involved as co-creators.
Why Stranger Things Day was the perfect moment
Netflix chose its announcement date with care. 6 November is Stranger Things Day, marking the fictional date in 1983 when Will Byers disappeared in the first season of the original series — the event that set the whole story in motion. Announcing Stranger Things Other Worlds on that day turned a fan celebration into a genuine surprise, with the teaser dropping on Friday morning and the news spreading across social media within minutes.
The prequel is the second television spin-off from the franchise and the third overall, counting the stage production The First Shadow and the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. It arrives as the flagship show heads towards its conclusion, giving Netflix a way to keep the world of Hawkins — and the Upside Down — alive long after the original series ends. For a franchise that has defined streaming television for a decade, a 1950s origin story is a bold new direction rather than a safe retread.
What fans in Pakistan can expect
For now, Stranger Things Other Worlds remains a title, a teaser and a 2028 premiere window — no cast has been announced and no full trailer has been released. That has not stopped fans from speculating about how the 1955 story will connect to Henry Creel, the Upside Down and the experiments that came decades later. More details, including casting, are expected as production in New Mexico gets under way.
When it arrives in 2028, the series will stream on Netflix worldwide, including in Pakistan, where the original show has a large following.
