StepFun StepX Neo Launched: The “Agentic Smartphone” Where an AI Agent Replaces the Apps

StepFun StepX Neo Launched: The “Agentic Smartphone” Where an AI Agent Replaces the Apps

Chinese artificial-intelligence company StepFun has pulled the covers off the StepX Neo, a smartphone built around a single radical idea: instead of you tapping through apps, an AI agent living inside the phone does the tapping for you. The company calls it the world’s first mass-market “agentic smartphone” — a claim that, if even half true, could signal where the entire smartphone industry is heading next.

The announcement, reported on 1 November 2026, puts StepFun — a company founded in 2023 by former Microsoft vice-president Jiang Daxin — squarely in one of the fiercest races in consumer technology: who can turn the phone from a collection of apps into a true AI assistant that acts on your behalf.

What makes the StepX Neo “agentic”?

The heart of the StepX Neo is Step Amoo, a built-in AI agent, running on Step AOS — StepFun’s own operating system that, according to reports, combines elements of Android, Linux and a real-time operating system. Where a normal phone waits for you to open an app, find a flight, enter dates and pay, the StepX Neo is designed to handle multi-step tasks from a single command.

StepFun says the phone can book a flight, handle live translation across 32 languages, and carry out everyday tasks on its own. It also claims offline AI support — meaning the agent can keep working even without an internet connection — and that the phone learns your preferences over time to make better suggestions. The pitch is simple: tell the phone what you want, and it figures out the how.

No price, no launch date — yet

For all the bold claims, StepFun has not announced a price or a release date for the StepX Neo. That is a common pattern with concept-forward launches: the technology story lands first, and the commercial details follow. What the company has shown is a direction of travel rather than a product you can pre-order today.

Sceptics will note that “world’s first” claims in the smartphone world rarely go unchallenged. Still, the underlying trend is hard to argue with — the industry’s centre of gravity is shifting from smarter apps to phones where the AI agent itself is the interface.

Chinese brands are racing to kill the app layer

StepFun is not alone. ZTE recently showed off its Nubia Navix Ultra, which runs ByteDance’s Doubao AI agent and can be summoned by voice or a dedicated physical button — reportedly with no conventional home screen and no conventional app store. Honor, meanwhile, has worked with Alibaba on its YOYO agent, which ships on devices running MagicOS 10.

Technology commentators argue that Chinese manufacturers have a structural advantage in this race: unlike Apple and Google, they have no stake in the existing app economy, so they can afford to disrupt it. All three of these agent-centric handsets reportedly use the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to give their AI agents system-level access — the technical foundation that lets an agent actually operate the phone rather than just talk to it.

Why Pakistani readers should care

For Pakistan’s smartphone market, which follows Chinese brands closely, the StepX Neo is a preview of what mid-range and flagship phones could look like within a couple of years. AI features — translation, on-device assistants, camera intelligence — are already key selling points in the local market, and agentic capabilities are the logical next step.

There is no word yet on whether the StepX Neo will reach Pakistan or what it might cost here. But the message from StepFun’s launch is clear: the era of the app grid is being challenged, and the next great smartphone battle will be fought over who builds the best agent — not the best app store.
