Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has released DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017, a faster and leaner update to its open-source AI model, intensifying its challenge to Silicon Valley heavyweights OpenAI and Anthropic. The Hangzhou-based company unveiled the model on Saturday, 17 October 2026, through a series of posts on X, describing it as offering stronger benchmark performance, faster task completion and shorter outputs than the previous version.

The launch of DeepSeek V4.1 Flash comes just five weeks after the original V4.1-Flash debuted on 10 September 2026, underscoring the blistering pace at which the Chinese lab is shipping updates. According to the company’s technical report published on the AI platform Hugging Face, the new open-source AI model delivers substantial improvements across reasoning, coding, agentic tasks and visual benchmarks, making DeepSeek V4.1 Flash one of the most significant open releases of the year. DeepSeek says the model uses “reinforcement learning with self-feedback” to strengthen end-to-end project development, from game creation to 3D modelling.

Like its predecessor, DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017 is released with open weights under the MIT licence, meaning developers anywhere in the world — including Pakistan — can download, modify and deploy it on their own infrastructure free of charge.

Benchmark Scores: 77.0 on DeepSWE, Ahead of Claude Opus 5

The headline number in the DeepSeek V4.1 Flash launch is its score on DeepSWE v1.1, a demanding software-engineering benchmark. The new model resolved 77.0% of tasks, up from 74.2% for the September version of V4.1-Flash. That figure also edges past Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5, which scored 74.0% on the same test, according to DeepSeek’s own testing.

Independent analysis of the release shows the DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 checkpoint leading on several agent-focused benchmarks, including Automation-Bench (60.5), Agents’ Last Exam (35.4) and Apex Bench (72.1). Claude Opus 5 still leads on others, including Terminal-Bench 4.0 and Humanity’s Last Exam, where the gap runs to nearly 14 points. All benchmark figures come from DeepSeek itself and have not yet been independently verified — a caveat worth keeping in mind when comparing the DeepSeek vs Claude contest.

DeepSeek also reported improved scores on Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE), with the updated model achieving between 36.8 and 42.6, surpassing the 36.8 to 39.1 range of its predecessor.

DeepSeek API Pricing: About $0.20 Per Coding Task

Where DeepSeek V4.1 Flash may matter most is pricing. DeepSeek API pricing remains unchanged from the September release, with off-peak rates starting at just 15 cents per million uncached input tokens. Because the new model produces shorter outputs — and AI usage is typically billed by the volume of text generated — the effective cost per task has fallen further.

DeepSeek’s own figures put the effective per-task cost at under $0.20 to $0.25 for typical coding work, compared with $2 to $10 or more for competing flagship models — a gap of roughly 40 times. Developers access the model through the existing deepseek-flash API endpoint, so no integration changes are required to switch to DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017.

The aggressive DeepSeek API pricing strategy has already rattled markets once: the September launch of V4.1-Flash triggered sharp share-price drops for Chinese rivals including MiniMax and Alibaba. For startups and freelancers in Pakistan, where every rupee of compute cost counts, an open-source AI model this capable at this price could be transformative.

New Search and Fetch APIs Open to All Developers

Alongside the model, DeepSeek opened its in-house search engine to outside developers for the first time. The new Search API returns up to 50 ranked web results per query, while a separate Fetch API converts a single web page into Markdown. Both cost $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests, and calls made through DeepSeek Harness, Anthropic’s Claude Code or OpenAI’s Codex are free until 1 November 2026.

DeepSeek says it tuned the V4.1-Flash-1017 update specifically for agent software, including its own DeepSeek Harness tool and two Tencent products — the CodeBuddy coding assistant and WorkBuddy, a desktop agent for office work. The update builds on the V4.1 Flash architecture: a mixture-of-experts design with 552 billion total parameters, only 8 billion active during input processing and 16 billion during output generation, with a context window of up to one million tokens.

How to Try DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Today

DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (build 1017) is live now across the company’s website, its mobile app and its developer platform. The open weights are available on Hugging Face and ModelScope for anyone who wants to run the model on their own hardware.

The launch lands days after DeepSeek suffered a roughly five-hour outage that left its servers unreachable — an incident some experts attributed to insufficient computing resources, according to Bloomberg. Slowdowns and service disruptions have reportedly risen as the company’s lower-cost models surge in popularity among developers, straining its infrastructure.

Even so, the pattern is clear: fast, incremental releases that keep pushing the price of frontier-class AI capability down. Whether you are a student in Lahore experimenting with AI coding assistants or a startup in Karachi building agent-based products, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is now the cheapest way to access this level of performance — and it is only a download away.
