Pakistan now has a new weapon against smog — and it works three days into the future. The Pakistan Air Quality Initiative (PAQI) has presented the operational capabilities of Hawanama, an AI-powered air quality forecasting system designed to predict pollution episodes before they happen, at the Pakistan National Clean Air Conference 2026 in Islamabad.
The name says it all. In Urdu, “Hawa” means air and “Nama” means a story or narrative — so Hawanama is quite literally “the story of air”. And for the first time, Pakistan will be able to read that story in advance.
From Watching Pollution to Predicting It
Until now, Pakistan’s air quality systems have mostly told people what the air is like right now. Monitors across Punjab measure pollution in real time and display the numbers on public dashboards. Useful — but by the time the readings look bad, the smog is already there.
Hawanama changes that equation. Instead of only reporting today’s pollution, this air quality forecasting system predicts how the air will look up to three days ahead. That extra time is the difference between reacting to smog and preparing for it: authorities can plan school closures and traffic restrictions in advance, hospitals can brace for a rush of breathing problems, and families can decide when to keep children indoors.
How the Hawanama Air Quality Forecasting System Works
The system pulls together several streams of information that, on their own, only tell part of the story: readings from ground-based monitoring stations, satellite observations, weather and meteorological data, and a full emissions inventory covering every source sector — from vehicles and factories to crop burning and brick kilns.
Fed into modern artificial intelligence and machine-learning models, these datasets produce pollution forecasts up to three days ahead, along with a clearer picture of exactly where the pollution is coming from. The result is a shift from raw measurements to something people can actually act on.
Hawanama is being built by PAQI together with The Urban Unit. PAQI — a recipient of the international EPIC Air Quality Award — has said the platform will be launched publicly, with the underlying code shared openly for anyone to inspect and improve. In other words, the tool is being built in the open, for everyone.
Why the Timing Matters
The announcement comes at a moment when Pakistan’s air crisis is impossible to ignore. Lahore has spent recent winters choking under thick smog, with the city regularly ranking among the most polluted places on earth during peak season. At the same Clean Air Conference, Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik estimated that dirty air costs Pakistan around 6.5 per cent of its GDP — paid for in hospital visits, missed work and damaged health, especially among children and outdoor workers.
It also lands as Punjab expands its own monitoring muscle. The province’s environment agency has grown its network from just three air-quality stations in Lahore in 2024 to 59 monitoring stations across Punjab, with plans to reach 100. Hawanama’s forecasts will have far more ground data to work with than would have been possible even a year ago.
What Happens Next
The real test, as experts at the conference noted, is not whether Hawanama can generate forecasts — it is whether those forecasts change decisions. The conference discussions focused on exactly that: connecting the science to the people who need it, from environmental officials and city administrations to parents checking the air before sending their children to school.
PAQI’s promise to release the platform and its code publicly is a strong signal. An open forecasting system can be checked, improved and trusted — and other cities and provinces can adopt it rather than starting from scratch.
For now, Hawanama marks a genuine milestone for air quality forecasting in Pakistan: the country is no longer just measuring its smog. It is learning to see it coming.
