ECP Sets December 31 Deadline for Lawmakers to Declare Assets — Miss It and Face Suspension

The Election Commission of Pakistan has told every lawmaker in the country to declare their assets by 31 December 2026 — or face having their name published and their membership suspended. The ECP asset declaration deadline applies to members of the Senate, the National Assembly and all four provincial assemblies, and the commission has warned that false information in a declaration can lead to legal proceedings.

The directive was issued on Friday, 6 November. It is the annual exercise required under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, under which every member of an assembly and the Senate must file a statement of assets and liabilities each year. The ECP has reminded lawmakers that the requirement covers not only their own holdings but also the assets and liabilities of their spouses and dependent children.

The declarations must cover the financial year 2025–26 and set out the assets and liabilities held as of 30 June 2026. Lawmakers file the statement on Form-B, the prescribed form issued by the Election Commission, which also covers the holdings of a spouse and dependent children.

Form-B can be collected free of cost from the Election Commission Secretariat in Islamabad, the offices of the provincial election commissioners, the Senate Secretariat, the National Assembly Secretariat and the secretariats of the provincial assemblies. It can also be downloaded from the ECP’s website.

The ECP’s reminder is a routine part of the electoral calendar, but it carries real consequences for members who ignore it — and the commission has shown before that it will act on the deadline.

According to the commission, the names of members who fail to submit their statements by 31 December will be made public on 1 January 2027. Those lawmakers will then get one final chance to comply, with a grace period running until 15 January 2027.

Members who still have not filed by 15 January will have their membership suspended on 16 January, under Section 137(3) of the Elections Act. A suspended member will not be allowed to take part in the proceedings of their assembly — including attending sessions and voting — until the statement is filed and the membership is restored.

False information will mean legal action

The ECP has also cautioned lawmakers against filing misleading or false information. The commission says that if any submitted asset details are found to be false, strict legal action will follow under the laws governing corrupt practices.

The warning matters because asset declarations are one of the few public records of what elected representatives own. The statements are meant to let voters and the commission itself check whether a lawmaker’s declared wealth matches their known income — and the law treats a false declaration as a serious offence, not a paperwork slip.

Last year, hundreds missed the deadline

The scale of non-compliance last year shows why the commission issues the reminder so firmly. When the same deadline fell on 31 December 2025, as many as 446 lawmakers failed to submit their statements of assets and liabilities on time — including 125 members of the National Assembly, 26 senators, 159 members of the Punjab Assembly, 62 of the Sindh Assembly, 48 of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and 26 of the Balochistan Assembly.

The commission then suspended the memberships of 159 lawmakers on 16 January 2026 for failing to file by the extended deadline. Those suspended included 32 MNAs, 50 Punjab Assembly members, 33 Sindh Assembly lawmakers, 28 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa members, seven Balochistan Assembly members and nine senators. Their memberships were restored only after they filed their statements.

That history is the reason this year’s reminder comes with such a clear sequence of dates: file by 31 December, be named on 1 January if you do not, and lose your seat in the house on 16 January if you still have not complied.

Lawmakers who have not yet filed should obtain Form-B from the Election Commission Secretariat or their provincial election commissioner’s office, or download it from the ECP’s website, and submit the completed statement before 31 December 2026. The statement must reflect holdings as of 30 June 2026 and include the assets and liabilities of the spouse and dependent children.

With less than two months to go, the message from the Election Commission is simple: declare on time, declare honestly, or face suspension.
