CSS 2027: Exam Guide, Syllabus and Preparation

The CSS 2027 examination cycle is officially underway, and for thousands of aspirants across Pakistan, this is the most consequential academic year of their lives. The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has announced the full roadmap for the Central Superior Services Competitive Examination 2027, starting with the MCQ-Based Preliminary Test (MPT) on Saturday, 10 October 2026, followed by the written examination from 27 January 2027. Whether you are a first-time candidate or a repeater refining your strategy, understanding every stage of the CSS examination process is the difference between a structured preparation and wasted months of scattered effort.
CSS 2027 Exam Schedule and Key Dates
The official FPSC timetable for this competitive examination cycle is now public. The MPT public notice was issued on 2 August 2026, with online applications accepted from 3 to 20 August 2026. The screening test, originally set for 27 September, was rescheduled by FPSC to 10 October 2026. Candidates who pass the MPT can apply for the written examination when the advertisement is published on 8 November 2026; online applications will run from 10 to 25 November 2026, with hard copies and documents due at FPSC by 4 December 2026. The written papers begin on 27 January 2027. Note that FPSC has described the written-exam dates as tentative, so aspirants should check the commission’s official website weekly for updates.
The MPT itself is a 200-mark screening test consisting of 200 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 200 minutes, with a qualifying threshold of 33 per cent (66 out of 200). There is no negative marking, so candidates should attempt every question. The subject-wise breakdown is: English 50 marks, General Abilities (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, reasoning) 60 marks, General Knowledge (everyday science, current affairs, Pakistan affairs) 50 marks, Islamic Studies or Civics and Ethics for non-Muslims 20 marks, and Urdu 20 marks. Marks scored in the MPT are not counted toward the final CSS merit aggregate, but passing it is mandatory before you can sit the written papers at all.
Written Examination: Compulsory and Optional Subjects
The written examination carries 1,200 marks across twelve papers of 100 marks each. Six compulsory subjects, common to every candidate, contribute 600 marks: English Essay, English (Precis and Composition), General Science and Ability, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs, and Islamic Studies. The remaining 600 marks come from optional subjects chosen from FPSC’s approved groups, typically five or six subjects depending on the combination of 200-mark and 100-mark papers you select. Your optional subject choices are final once the application closes, so decide early and choose subjects where you can realistically score high.
The passing bar is strict and cumulative. A candidate must score at least 40 per cent in each compulsory paper, 33 per cent in each optional paper, and 50 per cent in aggregate across the 1,200 written marks — all three conditions simultaneously. Those who clear the written stage proceed to the psychological assessment and viva voce (interview) worth 300 marks, where a minimum of 100 marks is required. This is followed by a medical examination to confirm physical and mental fitness before final appointment.
Eligibility Criteria for the 2027 Cycle
The eligibility rules remain governed by the CSS Competitive Examination Rules, 2019. Candidates need a bachelor’s degree with at least second division from a recognised university, and the age limit is 21 to 30 years as on 31 December 2026. A two-year relaxation is available for specified categories, including government servants with at least two years of continuous service (including contract service), who may apply through the proper channel with departmental permission. The attempt counts when you appear in the written examination — the MPT alone does not consume an attempt.
The MPT application fee was Rs 250 (non-refundable), payable through a treasury or bank challan or the digital option FPSC specifies, while the written examination fee has been around Rs 2,200 in recent cycles. The exact written-exam fee for 2027 will be confirmed in the 8 November advertisement. Always confirm amounts from the official notice rather than social media rumours.
Preparation Strategy That Actually Works
Serious preparation for the written papers should begin with downloading the official FPSC syllabus and mapping every topic against your study materials. English Essay demands months of writing practice under timed conditions, not just reading — three hours, handwritten, with no notes, because knowing the material and performing it on exam day are different skills. Current Affairs must be read daily from quality newspapers and journals starting immediately; this paper cannot be prepared in a final sprint. For optionals, settle your combination by October 2026 at the latest and cover the past ten years of past papers for each subject to understand examiner trends.
For the MPT, focus on high-yield MCQs across English vocabulary and grammar, basic mathematics and analytical reasoning, and general knowledge with emphasis on current events of the past year. Because there is no negative marking, attempt every question. On exam day, carry three essentials: your original CNIC, the original fee receipt, and the printed online admission certificate (roll number slip). Reach the centre at least 45 minutes early, as gates close 15 minutes before the test begins, and mobile phones are not allowed inside the hall.
