Shilpa Rao’s Mic Cut Off Twice at Mumbai Concert: What Happened at Bollywood Music Project

Shilpa Rao walked off stage in Mumbai to chants of her own name, a heart sign for the crowd, and a microphone that had already been switched off twice. The singer’s set at the Bollywood Music Project festival on Saturday, 24 October 2026, ended long before she was ready to leave the stage, and the Shilpa Rao mic cut off footage has travelled far beyond the venue — it is now one of the most searched showbiz stories in Pakistan.

What happened, what Rao said about it, and why the apology has not calmed fans down? Here is the full story.

Shilpa Rao is one of those rare voices that belongs to the whole subcontinent. Pakistani audiences know her from songs that have played at every wedding and on every radio playlist for years, from “Khuda Jaane” to “Ghungroo”. So when videos of her being silenced mid-performance began circulating on social media on Saturday night, the reaction in Pakistan was immediate — and the search interest has kept the story near the top of Pakistan’s Google trends into Monday morning.

The anger is not about the performance — by every fan account, Rao was singing well. It is about how the evening was handled, and a singer being denied even a proper goodbye.

What happened on stage on 24 October

Rao was performing at the Bollywood Music Project, a multi-artist music festival held at Mumbai’s Jio World Garden, when her set was cut short. The Shilpa Rao mic cut off incident unfolded in two stages, according to first-hand accounts published by Bollywood Hungama and other outlets: her microphone was switched off while she was still performing, and then switched off a second time when she tried to address the crowd.

She reportedly remained on stage for around 15 to 20 minutes, hoping the sound and lights would be restored. Instead, the stage moved on to the next act while she was still standing there. The crowd refused to let the moment pass quietly, chanting “Shilpa, Shilpa” as she made a heart sign with her hands, blew a flying kiss to her fans, and walked off.

The festival’s line-up that evening also included Himesh Reshammiya, Hariharan, Euphoria, Anu Malik and Shahid Mallya, and the event had already been running behind schedule before Rao took the stage.

“Woh nahin gaane de rahe”: the moment fans filmed

The Shilpa Rao mic cut off clip that has travelled furthest shows Rao speaking to the audience after her microphone had already been cut once. “I just wanted to say bye. I can’t leave without saying bye,” she told the crowd, before adding in Hindi, “Woh nahin gaane de rahe” — they are not letting me sing. The remark drew loud boos for the organisers from the audience.

She told fans they had made her 15 to 20 minutes on stage amazing, and that she had performed in Mumbai after a long time. But before she could finish, her microphone was switched off again, even as the next performance continued on another stage. Fan footage has since been shared thousands of times.

Shilpa Rao’s heartbroken message to Mumbai

Later on Saturday night, Rao posted an emotional note on Instagram addressing the city directly. “Mumbai, a little piece of my heart broke tonight,” she wrote. “It hurts deeply to have something so beautiful taken away from us like this. But even when the music stopped, you did not. The way you kept calling my name, the love in your voices. I could feel it all.”

She described the evening’s story as unfinished and promised her fans she would return. “Our story tonight was left unfinished. I promise, I will come back. I love you, Mumbai. Forever and ever,” the note read. The post drew an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists.

Organisers apologise, industry body condemns

The Bollywood Music Project organisers issued an apology late on Saturday night on their official Instagram account. They said they hold Rao in the highest regard and deeply value her artistry, and blamed the abrupt ending on what they called unpredictable operational shifts, extended sets from earlier performances, and strict local authority guidelines and venue curfew regulations.

“Large-scale music festivals feature complex logistics and multi-artist lineups,” the organisers said. “Despite strict planning and coordination, live events can experience unpredictable operational shifts, including extended sets from earlier performances. Because our festivals operate under strict local authority guidelines and venue curfew regulations, these compounding delays unfortunately forced a premature end to her set.”

The apology has not ended the row. On Sunday, the All Indian Cine Workers Association strongly condemned the incident, calling it completely unacceptable and an insult to the singer’s dignity, and said it would support Rao if she chose to take action against the organisers.

Why fans are blaming the schedule — and what is still unanswered

Much of the online anger has focused on the running order. Attendees posting after the event claimed the festival was running nearly 45 minutes late, squeezing the later slots. Attention online turned in particular to composer Anu Malik and his daughter Ada Malik, whose dance act at the festival was widely shared in clips. Some attendees alleged that earlier performances overrunning contributed to the delays — claims that remain allegations by audience members, not findings by the organisers.

What is not yet known is whether Rao will take the matter further or whether the festival will offer her a return performance. As of Monday morning, she has said nothing beyond her emotional note and her promise to come back to Mumbai.

For now, the episode stands as a reminder of how quickly a live event can turn: one singer, one microphone switched off twice, and a crowd that would not stop chanting her name.
