Pakistan Football 2026: Results, SAFF Cup and Road Ahead
Pakistan football 2026 has been a year of contrasts: a trophy won in the Maldives, heavy defeats in the ASEAN Cup, and a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign — all building towards the SAFF Championship 2026 in Dhaka this November. For a team ranked among Asia’s lower tier, every competitive outing matters. Here is the complete review of Pakistan football 2026 results, fixtures and what comes next.
Pakistan Football 2026: Diamond Jubilee Triumph
The highlight of the year came in June 2026 at the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament in Malé, Maldives, where Pakistan lifted the trophy unbeaten. Pakistan opened with a 0-0 draw against Bangladesh Olympic on 1 June, then beat the Maldives 3-0 on 4 June (goals from Nawaz, Arshad and Hamid) and Afghanistan 2-0 on 7 June (Nawaz and Hamid). In the final on 10 June, Pakistan beat Afghanistan 2-0 again — Shayak scoring in the 24th minute and Hamid sealing it in stoppage time — to win the tournament.
Setbacks: AFC Qualifying and the ASEAN Cup
The competitive picture was less kind elsewhere. On 31 March 2026, Pakistan lost 1-2 to Myanmar at the Jinnah Sports Stadium in Islamabad in 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying, a damaging home defeat in a campaign where qualification remains a distant dream. Then at the ASEAN Cup in Indonesia (26 September-2 October 2026), Pakistan football 2026 endured a tough group: a 0-4 loss to Thailand in Bandung, a spirited 2-2 draw with the Philippines (Khan and Arshad scoring), and a 2-4 defeat to Vietnam (Mohib and Kaleemullah on target) in Jakarta.
SAFF Championship 2026: Pakistan’s Next Test
Pakistan’s immediate focus is the SAFF Championship 2026, played at the National Stadium in Dhaka from 5 to 17 November. Pakistan are in Group B with defending champions India and the Maldives. The fixtures: Pakistan v India on 5 November (3:30pm Dhaka time, 2:30pm PKT) in the tournament opener, then Pakistan v Maldives on 8 November. India play the Maldives on 11 November. The top two from each group reach the semi-finals on 14 November, with the final on 17 November. India are chasing a record 10th title, while for Pakistan the Maldives game on 8 November may decide the campaign more than the India clash. Nepal’s participation remains uncertain due to their FIFA suspension.
Pakistan’s SAFF Championship history offers modest encouragement: the Green Shirts won the title in 1997 and finished runners-up in 2005, but recent editions have ended in group-stage exits. A semi-final berth in Dhaka would count as genuine progress for the current squad.
Domestic Football and the Bigger Picture
The 1-2 home defeat to Myanmar on 31 March at Islamabad’s Jinnah Sports Stadium underlined how far Pakistan remain from AFC Asian Cup qualification — an appearance at the continental finals remains a distant dream. The qualifying campaign continues to be hampered by limited international exposure and the stop-start nature of the domestic game. Domestically, the Pakistan Football League’s 2026 season has kept the club game alive, with departmental and city sides providing the player pool for the national team. Several national-team players, including the Diamond Jubilee scorers, earned their call-ups through strong PFL form — a pathway the Pakistan Football Federation hopes to strengthen with more televised fixtures and youth development programmes. With the SAFF Championship weeks away, the federation has scheduled a short training camp in Lahore to fine-tune set pieces and defensive shape before the Dhaka opener.
