Pakistan Football Team: History, Rankings and Road Ahead

The Pakistan football team, nicknamed the Shaheens (The Falcons), represents one of world football’s great underachievers. In a country obsessed with cricket, the national side has struggled for decades with administrative chaos, scarce funding and limited international exposure. Yet recent signs — including a first-ever point in a FIFA competition at the ASEAN Cup 2026 — suggest the Shaheens may finally be turning a corner. This guide covers the history, records, rankings and the road ahead.

Pakistan Football Team: A Short History

The national side played its first international against Iran in Tehran in October 1950, losing 5-1. The 1960s are remembered as the strongest era, highlighted by a record 7-0 thrashing of Thailand in 1960. The Shaheens finished sixth at the 1954 Asian Games and won South Asian Games gold medals in 1989 and 1991. A SAFF Championship third-place finish in 1997 remains the best result in the regional championship. The highest FIFA ranking was 141st in February 1994 — a mark the current squad can only dream of.

FIFA Ranking 2026

The national side sits at 197th in the FIFA world rankings as of October 2026, a slight improvement after a difficult spell. In March 2026, the Shaheens had slipped to 203rd following defeat to Myanmar in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers — uncomfortably close to the all-time low of 205th recorded in June 2019. Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives all rank significantly higher, underlining how far the team has fallen behind its South Asian neighbours.

Records and Key Facts

• First international: Iran 5-1 Pakistan, Tehran, October 1950.
• Biggest win: 7-0 vs Thailand (1960); also 9-2 vs Guam (2008) and 7-0 vs Bhutan (2009).
• Biggest defeat: 9-1 vs Iran (1969); 0-8 vs Iraq (1993).
• Most caps: Haroon Yousaf (49). Top scorer: Muhammad Umer (18 goals).
• Home ground: Jinnah Sports Stadium, Islamabad. Head coach: Nolberto Solano, assisted by Titus Bramble.
• Captain: Abdullah Iqbal leads the current squad.

The Pakistan football team is governed by the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), whose offices have seen years of turmoil including FIFA suspensions. A normalisation process and an elected federation are now attempting to rebuild from the grassroots, and the return of regular competitive football is the clearest sign yet that the administration wants to move beyond the lost decade.

Pakistan Football Team at the ASEAN Cup 2026

History was made at the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 in Indonesia. The Shaheens earned their first-ever point in a FIFA competition with a dramatic 2-2 draw against the Philippines on 30 September 2026, coming back from 2-0 down through goals from Mohammad Ali Akbar and Abdul Samad Arshad. The squad had lost its opener 4-0 to Thailand, but the fightback against a side ranked more than 60 places higher was hailed as a significant achievement. Several overseas-based players joined the camp directly in Indonesia, and assistant coaches supervised training after head coach Nolberto Solano was delayed by a visa issue.

Pakistan Football Team: The Road Ahead

The road ahead is long but not hopeless. FIFA’s normalisation process, an elected federation and growing investment in youth football — including a FIFA Under-15 festival — are laying foundations. Overseas-born talent is strengthening the squad, and regular competitive fixtures like the ASEAN Cup offer the exposure the Pakistan football team has long lacked.
