What We Know So Far

The Central Command and Control Centre of Rescue 1122 received information about the Karachi factory fire and immediately dispatched a fire and rescue team, along with a fire brigade truck and an ambulance, to the site. According to the Rescue 1122 spokesperson, more than five fire tenders from Rescue 1122 and the KMC Fire Brigade reached the scene to take part in the firefighting operation.

The warehouse where the Karachi factory fire erupted sits on the upper floor of the garments factory at Plot No. A-14 near Metroville. Officials said further details about the cause of the fire, the extent of the damage and any possible casualties were not immediately available.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

Fire brigade officials said two water bowsers from the KMC Fire Brigade were also present at the site, while a snorkel vehicle was dispatched as a precautionary measure in view of potential risks. Garment warehouses typically store large quantities of fabric, textiles and packaging material, which can cause a Karachi warehouse fire to spread quickly and make it difficult for firefighters to bring under control. Firefighters are battling the blaze to prevent further loss of assets, the Rescue 1122 spokesperson said.

Second Fire at the Same Location in Days

In a worrying development, officials said a fire had also broken out at the same location a few days earlier. A repeated Karachi factory fire at the same plot raises serious questions about fire safety arrangements at the facility. Industrial safety experts routinely urge factory owners in Karachi to maintain functional fire alarms, extinguishers and clear emergency exits, particularly in units storing flammable material.

Karachi’s Industrial Fire Safety Problem

SITE, the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate, is one of Pakistan’s oldest and largest industrial zones, home to thousands of factories, including a large number of textile and garment units. The area has witnessed several industrial fires over the years, and the SITE area Karachi fire on Monday is the latest reminder of the risks workers and businesses face.

In September 2012, more than 250 workers were killed in a devastating garment factory fire in Baldia Town, Karachi — one of the worst industrial disasters in Pakistan’s history. Since then, authorities and industry groups have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards in industrial areas, though incidents continue to occur.

Investigation Underway

The cause of Monday’s Karachi factory fire has not yet been determined. Rescue 1122 and KMC officials have not reported any casualties so far, and the extent of the damage to the warehouse and the factory remains unclear. This is a developing story, and further details are expected as the firefighting operation progresses and officials complete their assessment of the site.
