GKS Scholarship 2027 South Korea: Undergraduate University Track Still Open

If you are a Pakistani student who has just finished school and dreams of studying abroad, South Korea deserves a serious look. Its universities are modern, its technology and culture are admired across the world, and its government offers one of the most complete scholarships available to international students. That scholarship is the Global Korea Scholarship, known as GKS. For the 2027 undergraduate intake, one application route has already closed, but another is still open — and that difference matters enormously. Read this guide carefully, choose the right track, and act while there is still time.

What Is the GKS Scholarship?

The Global Korea Scholarship is the South Korean government’s flagship scholarship programme, run by NIIED. It invites international students, including Pakistanis, to come and study in Korea. It is not a small discount or a partial award. For successful undergraduate scholars, it covers full tuition, a round-trip air ticket, a monthly living allowance, one year of Korean language training before the degree begins, and medical insurance.

That package is why competition is strong and why the rules must be followed exactly. The language year helps students with little Korean settle in and start their degree with confidence.

Embassy Track Has Closed, University Track Is Still Open

For the 2027 undergraduate intake there are two routes, and they are at very different stages.

The Embassy Track allowed online application through studyinkorea.go.kr from 15 to 30 September 2026. That track has now closed, so if you missed those dates, please do not waste time trying to apply through it.

The University Track is still open. Applications run from September to November 2026, with each university setting its own deadline and its own submission method. Under this track, you apply directly to one university and one department only.

Here is the warning every applicant must take seriously: applying to more than one track, programme or university will get your application disregarded. This is not a case where applying everywhere improves your chances. It does the opposite and can remove you from consideration completely. Choose one university, choose one department, and put all your effort into making that single application complete and strong.

Because each university sets its own closing date in November, there is no single deadline that fits everyone. The safe approach is to check your chosen university’s notice this week and work backwards from its date.

Who Can Apply for Undergraduate GKS?

Eligibility for undergraduate applicants is specific, so check each point honestly before you start preparing documents:

  • You must be a high school graduate, or a student who will graduate by 31 December 2026
  • You must be under 25 years of age, meaning born on or after 1 March 2002
  • You must have a cumulative score of 80% or above, or a rank in the top 20% of your graduating class

If you are finishing intermediate or A-levels this year, pay close attention to the graduation date and to how your marks are recorded. If you are not sure whether your score meets the 80% condition, or whether your school can confirm a top 20% rank, ask for clear documentation early. Selection teams will check these details, so accuracy at the start protects you later.

Selection Timeline for the 2027 Intake

The official guidelines set out a clear calendar for selection. First-round embassy results were due by mid-October. NIIED’s second round falls in November. University decisions are expected by 23 December 2026, and the final list of scholars is expected on 7 January 2027.

The programme begins in spring 2027 with the Korean language year. There is one helpful exception: students who already hold TOPIK level 5 or 6 are exempt from the language year and start their degree earlier. If that applies to you, make sure your TOPIK result is clearly included in your application. If it does not apply, do not worry at all — the language year is a normal, valued part of the journey for most GKS scholars.

Documents You Will Typically Need

Each university may publish its own checklist, but the documents typically required include:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Study plan
  • One recommendation letter
  • Citizenship proof
  • Transcripts and graduation certificate

At the document stage, legalised or apostilled copies, or consular-confirmed copies, are needed. In Pakistan, attestation can take longer than students expect, so start early, keep originals safe, and make clear scans of everything.

Your personal statement and study plan should be written in your own words. Explain honestly why you chose that particular university and department, what you hope to learn, and how the degree fits your future plans. A specific, sincere statement is always stronger than a copied template. For your recommendation letter, choose someone who knows your academic work well, and give them plenty of time to write it properly.

What Pakistani Students Should Do This Week

With university deadlines falling in November, this week is the time to move. Go to the official Study in Korea website, shortlist universities that offer a department matching your school subjects and interests, and then narrow your choice down to the one university and one department you will apply to. Read that university’s GKS notice from beginning to end, note its exact deadline and submission method, and build a simple checklist for every document.

Prepare attested documents early, draft your statement and study plan carefully, and submit one complete application before the deadline. If anything is unclear, contact the university directly. Official guidance should always come before rumours or forum posts.

A brief note for older readers: graduate GKS applications for Master’s and PhD study follow a separate calendar that opens in February. That is a different cycle, so please do not mix graduate dates with this undergraduate intake.

Missing the Embassy Track does not mean you have missed Korea. The University Track is still open, and for a focused student with strong grades and tidy documents, it is a real and respected route. Pick one university, respect its deadline, and give this opportunity your best, most careful effort. For official information and university details, please visit the official Study in Korea website and confirm the final deadline directly with your chosen university before you submit.
