Faran Tahir Returns to Marvel After 18 Years in VisionQuest Episode 6

Pakistani-American actor Faran Tahir has made a stunning return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after nearly two decades, reprising his role as the villain Raza in the Disney+ series VisionQuest. The actor appears in Episode 6, titled “Deadlock”, which began streaming this week — and fans are calling it one of the most unexpected comebacks in Marvel history.

Raza was last seen in 2008’s Iron Man, the very first film of the MCU. That makes this an 18-year gap between appearances — the longest any actor has ever waited between two Marvel roles. For Pakistani fans, it is a moment of pride: one of their own, back on the biggest stage in global entertainment.

Who Is Raza? The Villain Who Accidentally Created Iron Man

To understand why this return matters, you have to go back to where it all began. In Iron Man (2008), Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar was the leader of a Ten Rings cell operating in Afghanistan. His men kidnapped Tony Stark and forced him to build a Jericho missile in a cave. Instead, Stark built the first Iron Man suit and escaped — the moment that launched the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Raza had been hired by Obadiah Stane, played by Jeff Bridges, who later betrayed him. Stane paralysed Raza with a high-frequency sonic device and ordered his men to “finish up”. But here is the twist that kept fans talking for 18 years: Raza’s death was never actually shown on screen. Marvel simply never told us what happened to him — until now.

What Happens in VisionQuest Episode 6

Without giving away every surprise, here is what viewers see in “Deadlock”. Vision, played by Paul Bettany, travels to Madripoor — the criminal island hub first introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — to rescue Tommy Maximoff from the bounty hunter Paladin, played by Todd Stashwick.

A tense negotiation is interrupted by gunfire. At the head of a heavily armed crew walks a bald man in a sharp suit — and Paladin immediately recognises his voice. It is Raza. He has traded his military fatigues for an expensive suit and wears an earpiece, most likely to protect himself from the kind of sonic attack that Stane once used on him.

Raza arrives carrying adamantium bullets capable of damaging even Vision. He is no longer working for the Ten Rings — Paladin’s reaction suggests Raza broke away from the organisation and now operates independently as a bounty hunter. The confrontation ends with Paladin besting Raza in a sword fight, leaving him alive but unconscious. Crucially, Raza is not the mystery client who hired Paladin; he is simply an extra set of hands brought in to help capture Vision. Which means the door is wide open for him to return again.

An 18-Year Wait: The Longest Gap in Marvel History

No actor in Marvel history has waited this long between appearances. Faran Tahir first played Raza when the MCU was a single film; he returns now, when it is the biggest entertainment franchise on the planet.

Tahir’s casting was first reported in January 2025, and the actor has since revealed that he had to keep the secret for a long time. Speaking on Ahmad Ali Butt’s podcast, he shared that an executive producer he knew from his 12 Monkeys days called him while he was walking in New York and offered him the role — referencing an old joke between them about Tahir reprising his roles in Star Trek and Iron Man.

He also revealed something fascinating: Raza was originally supposed to appear in three movies, with his story building across the early MCU — but Marvel’s sale to Disney changed those plans. It took 18 years, but the character finally got his second chapter.

A Proud Moment for Pakistan

Faran Tahir, born in Los Angeles to Pakistani parents and raised partly in Pakistan, has built a remarkable Hollywood career with roles in Star Trek, Elysium, The Old Man and 12 Monkeys. But Raza remains his most iconic role — the man whose actions accidentally created Iron Man, and by extension, Vision himself.

For Pakistani audiences, seeing a Pakistani actor return to the MCU after 18 years is more than a casting note. It is proof that Pakistani talent belongs on the world’s biggest screens — and that some comebacks are worth waiting nearly two decades for.

When and Where to Watch

VisionQuest premiered on October 13, 2026, with Paul Bettany headlining as Vision and James Spader returning as Ultron. Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for Star Trek: Picard, oversees the eight-episode season, which releases two episodes a week. Episodes 5 and 6 are streaming now on Disney+, Episode 7 arrives November 3, and the finale lands on November 10.
