Asim Munir Tehran Visit: Pakistan Army Chief Heads to Iran on Tuesday

Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, is due to arrive in Tehran on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, for talks with senior Iranian officials, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency and other Iranian media. The Asim Munir Tehran visit comes at a moment of continued tension between Iran and the United States, with Pakistan maintaining its role as a key mediator between the two countries.

Tasnim Reports Munir’s Arrival on Tuesday

According to Tasnim’s correspondent, the Pakistani army chief will travel to Tehran on Tuesday to meet and consult with officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The agency said the discussions would cover bilateral cooperation between Islamabad and Tehran as well as regional developments.

“Pakistan’s role as a mediator between Iran and the United States is another agenda item on Munir’s trip to Tehran,” Tasnim reported. Reuters, citing a Pakistani official and Iranian media, also confirmed that the visit is expected to take place on Tuesday.

As of Monday night, there was no official confirmation of the visit from Pakistan’s side.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role Between Tehran and Washington

The Asim Munir Tehran visit lands in the middle of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the confrontation between Iran and the United States. Iranian officials have repeatedly described Pakistan as the primary mediator between Tehran and Washington, with messages exchanged through Pakistani officials and also through Qatar.

This is not Munir’s first engagement with Tehran this year. The Field Marshal visited the Iranian capital on August 24, 2026, where he called on President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf and other senior officials. After that visit, the Foreign Office rejected reports that Munir had travelled as an “envoy” of the US administration, calling the claims “misleading and factually incorrect” and saying the trip was undertaken purely in the context of Pakistan’s ongoing mediation role.

Lavrov in Tehran a Day Earlier

Munir’s expected arrival follows a visit to Tehran by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday. Lavrov met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and was also scheduled to meet President Pezeshkian.

According to the Iranian presidency, Pezeshkian told Lavrov that US intervention and military deployments were major sources of regional tension, while also expressing Tehran’s readiness to consider initiatives involving regional countries to promote peace, security and development.

Strait of Hormuz Security a Central Concern

One of the most pressing issues hanging over the region is the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical international energy corridor. In the earlier August visit, Pakistan and Iran held discussions on reopening the strait and bringing an “expedited termination” of the US-Iran conflict, according to the military’s media wing.

Recent weeks have seen renewed instability in the region. The conflict between Iran and the United States, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February 2026, saw an interim peace deal brokered by Pakistan in June that collapsed weeks later in July. Hostilities in and around the Strait of Hormuz have since continued, dragging on the conflict as talks remain stalled.

What to Watch Next

With Munir due in Tehran on Tuesday, attention will be on whether the visit produces any movement on the stalled mediation track. Pakistan’s civilian leadership — including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi — has regularly exchanged messages with Iran’s leadership in recent months in hopes of brokering lasting peace in the region.

Any official statement from Islamabad or Tehran confirming the visit, along with details of Munir’s meetings in the Iranian capital, will be watched closely by regional observers.
