Karachi Shop Roof Collapse Kills One Near New Nazimabad Flyover as Rescue Teams Search for More Trapped

The roof of a corner shop collapsed in Karachi on Thursday, killing at least one person and leaving rescue teams digging through the rubble for more people feared trapped underneath.

The Karachi shop roof collapse happened near the New Nazimabad Flyover during construction work at the shop, according to Rescue 1122. The dead man, aged 43, was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Three people have been pulled from the debris so far, and the search for anyone still buried under the rubble is continuing.

Rescue 1122 said its teams reached the site soon after the roof gave way and began clearing the debris by hand and with machinery. Dr Abid Shaikh, the chief operating officer of Rescue 1122, said three victims had been recovered from the rubble and shifted to hospital, while more people were feared trapped.

Edhi ambulances and volunteers were also present at the scene, and the dead man was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital by Edhi, according to reports. Clearing a collapsed structure is slow, careful work, because moving one piece of debris can shift what is left above the people underneath, so rescue teams remove material in small sections while they listen and search for survivors.

The exact number of people inside the shop when the roof fell has not been confirmed, and officials have not said how long the rescue operation will take. Rescue 1122 said its teams would continue searching until the site had been fully cleared.

Chief Minister Orders Rapid Rescue and Building Report

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and ordered rapid rescue operations to clear the debris. He also directed that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment.

The chief minister has asked the Sindh Building Control Authority, known as the SBCA, for a report on the incident. The report is meant to determine what caused the roof to collapse and whether any negligence was involved, since the collapse happened while construction work was under way at the shop.

That question matters beyond this one shop. A roof that gives way during building work raises different questions from a roof that fails on a building where no work is going on, and the SBCA report will be the first official account of what went wrong.

Why the Injury Figures Differ Between Reports

Early reports of the Karachi shop roof collapse do not all agree on how many people were hurt. Rescue 1122 said three people were recovered from the debris and taken to hospital. The Express Tribune reported one person killed and two injured, which matches the three people Rescue 1122 said it had pulled out. The Islamabad Post headline put the injured figure at six.

Being pulled from the rubble and being injured are not the same thing, and the figures describe different counts taken at different times, so they cannot be reconciled from the information available so far. The death toll is the one figure every outlet agrees on: at least one person was killed.

Updated figures from rescue officials will give one clear count, and that count will matter most to the families waiting for news of who is in hospital, who is still missing and who has died.

Fourth Collapse in Less Than a Month

The Karachi shop roof collapse is the fourth such incident in Pakistan in less than a month, according to a list carried in the reports of the collapse. On 27 October, one person was killed and seven others were injured when the roof of an under-construction building collapsed near Multan’s Northern Bypass.

On 15 October, at least 31 people, including 30 students and a female teacher, were killed when a school roof collapsed in Peshawar‘s Afridi Abad area. And on 9 October, three people were killed when a wall of a local Union Council office collapsed on them in Karachi’s Malir area.

The four incidents cover different cities and different kinds of structures, from a building under construction to a school and a local office, but they share a common thread: a roof or a wall gave way on the people below. Taken together, they raise a question about whether building safety rules are being followed consistently across the country, and the SBCA report on the Karachi collapse will be watched for an answer.

For now, the search beneath the shop is the most urgent part of the story. Whether more people are found under the rubble is the question that will shape the next day of coverage, and the building authority’s findings will shape the questions that come after it.
