DAAD EPOS Scholarship 2027/28: Funded Master’s and PhD Study in Germany for Working Professionals

If you have been working in Pakistan for a few years and keep thinking that a strong Master’s or PhD from abroad could change your career, the DAAD EPOS Scholarship for 2027/28 deserves your attention this week. It is one of the few major programmes made specifically for working professionals, not for fresh graduates, and Pakistan is firmly on its list of eligible countries. The catch is timing: there is no single national deadline, and some courses have already closed in 2026, so check your chosen course immediately.

What the DAAD EPOS Programme Actually Is

EPOS stands for Development-Related Postgraduate Courses. It is run by DAAD, Germany’s academic exchange service, and funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, known as BMZ. The idea behind it is practical and generous: professionals from developing and newly industrialised countries can study a development-related course at a German university, gain fresh skills and knowledge, and bring that learning back to their work at home.

Pakistan is on the eligible DAC country list, so Pakistani professionals are welcome to apply. For this round, courses start in October 2027. That may sound far away, but deadlines fall during 2026, so this intake will be gone if you wait until next year.

Around forty courses are offered under EPOS, in areas that matter deeply to Pakistan’s future. These include economics, engineering, renewable energy, water management, agriculture, public and international health, environmental governance, development studies and the social sciences. Whether you work for a government department, an NGO, a hospital or a private company, a course may well match your work.

The Most Important Rule: You Apply to the Course, Not to DAAD

This point confuses many first-time applicants, so please read it carefully. You do not send one central application to DAAD and wait for them to place you somewhere. Instead, you choose a course from the official EPOS course list or brochure and apply directly to that university course, following its instructions and including the DAAD application form as part of your application.

Because each course runs its own admissions, every course also sets its own deadline. For the October 2027 intake, deadlines are spread across 2026. Some courses closed in mid-October 2026. Others close at the end of October, in November, or later. Two friends applying for different courses could easily face deadlines that are weeks or even months apart.

The lesson is simple and urgent: do not assume there is one deadline for everyone, and do not rely on a date shared in an old social media post. Shortlist your course first, then check that exact course’s deadline in the official DAAD scholarship database straight away. If your first choice has just closed, look at the list again. Another suitable course may still be open.

Who Can Apply: The Core Requirements

EPOS is built for people already established in a profession. Check these core requirements honestly before spending time on forms.

  • A recent Bachelor’s degree: A Bachelor’s degree, usually four years, completed within the last six years.
  • Relevant work experience: At least two years of relevant professional experience gained after your Bachelor’s degree. Internships and purely academic teaching or research experience generally do not count.
  • Strong academic results: Above-average results, broadly in the upper third of your class.
  • Language ability: The level your course requires. Many courses are taught in English and typically ask for IELTS, TOEFL or an equivalent, around IELTS 6 or CEFR B2 for many courses. Always check your specific course.
  • Time spent in Germany: Applicants must not have lived in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application.

If you meet these points, you are in a strong position to apply. If you fall short on work experience, or your degree is older than six years, it is better to know that now than after weeks of preparation. Individual courses may also add their own requirements, so read the course page closely as well.

What the Scholarship Pays — and What It Does Not

The funding package is substantial and, for most scholars, covers the main costs of living and studying in Germany. DAAD pays a monthly stipend of EUR 992 for Master’s students and EUR 1,400 for doctoral candidates, with the doctoral rate applying from February 2026. The scholarship also includes health, accident and personal liability insurance, together with a travel allowance. In certain cases, scholars may also receive a monthly rent subsidy and allowances for an accompanying spouse and children. Funding normally runs for 12 to 42 months, depending on the course.

Now the honest part, which every applicant must understand before applying: DAAD does not pay tuition fees. Many EPOS courses are at public universities in Germany where no tuition is charged, and for those courses this is not a problem at all. However, some courses, for example certain fee-charging international health programmes, charge substantial fees that the student must cover another way. Never assume your course is free; check its fee position first.

A Practical Plan for This Week

Because deadlines are close and scattered, a calm but quick plan will help you far more than last-minute panic. Start by shortlisting just one or two courses this week, choosing only those that truly match your education and your work experience.

Next, download the DAAD application form and the document checklist for your chosen course, and begin with the slow items first. Certified copies of degrees and transcripts can take time to arrange, and employer reference letters need notice. Few managers can write a thoughtful letter on the same day you ask, so request these early, explain your deadline politely, and keep safe copies of everything you prepare.

Finally, remember where your completed application goes: to the course itself, with the DAAD form included. Follow the course instructions exactly, right down to document order and file formats.

Germany offers world-class universities, and EPOS offers a real route in for experienced Pakistani professionals. Do not let this round pass: check the official list today, confirm your deadline, and begin. Full details are on the official DAAD scholarship database page for EPOS. Good luck to every applicant from Pakistan.
