Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assaults: London Jury Convicts Comedian, Sentencing on 9 November

Comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault by a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London, bringing one of the most closely watched celebrity trials of the year to a dramatic close. The 51-year-old was remanded in custody immediately after the verdicts were delivered on Thursday, 5 November 2026, and will be sentenced on Monday, 9 November.

The verdicts cap a four-week trial that began on 12 October. Brand pleaded not guilty to every charge and attended court each day with his wife, Laura Brand.

Coverage of the verdict was reported by Radio Times and Far Out Magazine.

What the Jury Decided in the Russell Brand Guilty Verdict

The jury of eight men and four women found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The four offences on which he was convicted involved four women and took place between 2004 and 2009.

He was acquitted of the remaining charges — two further counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. In total, Brand had faced seven charges relating to allegations made by six women covering the period from 1999 to 2009.

Brand told the court he could not remember some of the incidents raised and that others had been consensual encounters.

The Charges and the Trial at Southwark Crown Court

The case against Brand was brought in two stages. In April 2025 he was charged with five offences relating to four women, covering alleged incidents between 1999 and 2005. In December 2025 he was charged with two further offences — one count of rape and one count of sexual assault — relating to two more women in 2009.

The trial opened at Southwark Crown Court on 12 October 2026. Brand took the witness stand on 28 October, telling the jury that the allegations had been deeply traumatic and had a devastating impact on him. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC told the court that Brand would often begin by flattering the women before his behaviour changed, describing a sudden shift from charming to frightening.

The case followed a 2023 Channel 4 documentary that reported accusations of rape, sexual assault and abuse against Brand. He denied them at the time, saying his relationships had always been consensual — a position he maintained throughout the trial.

What the Judge Said: A Significant Custodial Term

Addressing Brand after the verdicts were delivered, Mr Justice Bennathan said: “You have been convicted of a number of offences, including one of rape.” He told the court that the consequence of the verdicts was inevitably a significant custodial term, and that his current view was that he had to remand Brand in custody.

Brand was taken into custody immediately. He will return to Southwark Crown Court on Monday, 9 November, when the judge will decide the length of his sentence.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who led the investigation, praised the courage of the women who came forward, saying that without their bravery the outcome would not have been possible.

He added: “Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women. As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be.”

Who Is Russell Brand?

Brand rose to fame as a comedian on MTV in the UK before hosting the Big Brother spin-off Big Brother’s Big Mouth and his own radio programme, The Russell Brand Show. He went on to land film roles in the 2007 comedy St Trinian’s, and had parts in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Rock of Ages.

In recent years he reinvented himself as an online commentator and now lives in the United States.

The conviction marks a sharp fall for a performer who was once one of Britain’s best-known comedy stars.

What Happens Next After the Russell Brand Guilty Verdict

The immediate next step is sentencing on Monday, 9 November, when Mr Justice Bennathan will set the length of the prison term. Until then Brand remains in custody.

The case may not end there. Following the conviction, it was revealed that Brand is under investigation for two more alleged rapes, and could face further charges. The Metropolitan Police said the suspect had previously been interviewed under caution in connection with those allegations.

The verdict stands as one of the most significant celebrity convictions in a British court in recent years.
