Lionel Messi has won the 2026 MLS Golden Boot, finishing the regular season with 26 goals for Inter Miami and becoming the first player in the league’s 30-year history to win the top-scorer award in consecutive seasons. The award was confirmed after the final day of the regular season on Saturday, when Miami drew 3-3 with Charlotte FC. Messi, 39, did not score in that game, but his tally was already enough to hold off FC Dallas striker Petar Musa, who finished second with 22 goals. The Messi MLS Golden Boot win adds another first to a career built on them.
A Record Nobody Had Managed Before

The Messi MLS Golden Boot record is one nobody had managed before. Major League Soccer has been running since 1996, and in all that time no player had ever finished as the league’s top scorer in two seasons running. Five men had won the Golden Boot twice before — Bradley Wright-Phillips, Chris Wondolowski, Jeff Cunningham, Taylor Twellman and Preki — but each of them had a gap between their two wins. Messi is now the sixth player to win the award twice, and the first to do it in successive years.
His first Golden Boot came in 2025, when he scored 29 goals and set up 19 more. That 29-goal haul was the fourth-highest single-season total in MLS history; only Carlos Vela’s 34 goals for Los Angeles FC in 2019 stands above it among the names on the list. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now followed it with a second straight scoring title, and this time the record he broke was the one about doing it twice in a row.
The Numbers Behind Messi’s Second Golden Boot

The Messi MLS Golden Boot win was built on remarkable consistency rather than one hot streak. He scored his 26 goals in just 31 appearances, at 0.87 goals per game — the best rate in the league. He also provided 17 assists, taking his total goal contributions for the season to 43, again the highest figure in MLS.
Only one of his 26 goals came from the penalty spot. His 25 non-penalty goals are the second-highest single-season total in league history, behind only his own 28 from 2025. He is just the second player ever to score at least 25 goals in consecutive MLS seasons, and he led the league with 183 shots while sharing the top mark for multi-goal games, with six.
The standout afternoon of his campaign came in August, when he scored four times in a 7-1 rout of Montreal. Across the last three regular seasons he has now scored 75 goals, and his 127 goal contributions between 2024 and 2026 stand 28 ahead of the next-best player in that span, Evander on 98. Inter Miami finished the regular season with a league-high 80 goals, with Messi accounting for nearly a third of them.
Decision Day: Scoreless but Still the Top Scorer

The final day of the season, known as Decision Day, gave the Golden Boot race a tense finish even though Messi never found the net. Inter Miami let a 3-0 home lead slip against Charlotte FC and settled for a 3-3 draw, but Messi still shaped the game: he set up the first two goals, both from corners, before the visitors fought back.
His nearest rivals could not catch him. Musa ended on 22 goals, Nashville’s Sam Surridge finished third with 21, and Vancouver’s Brian White was one further back on 20. Miami ended the regular season second in the Eastern Conference on 60 points, which secured home-field advantage for the club’s first two rounds of the play-offs. Nashville, meanwhile, set a new MLS record with 77 points after beating Cincinnati 2-0.
What Comes Next for Messi and Inter Miami

The Golden Boot is unlikely to be the last honour Messi collects this year. He is in contention to win the MLS Most Valuable Player award for a third consecutive season, and Inter Miami now turn to the play-offs, where they will defend their MLS Cup title.
At 39, Messi remains the defining attacking force in the league he joined in 2023. The Messi MLS Golden Boot story is not just about one more trophy for his collection: it is the first time in three decades that any player has led MLS scoring in back-to-back seasons, and it took the greatest player of his generation to do it.
