Karak CTD DSP Martyred: Four Police Officers Killed in Gunbattle with Militants
Four Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police personnel, including a senior Counter-Terrorism Department officer, were martyred in a fierce gunbattle with militants in the Charpara area of Karak district on Thursday, in one of the deadliest attacks on the province’s police force this month.
The Karak CTD DSP martyred in the clash has been identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police Imranuddin Khan of the Counter-Terrorism Department. Also martyred were Latambar station house officer Sub-Inspector Afzal Awan, Constable Kazim and Head Constable Amjad of the bomb-disposal unit, according to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police.
How the Karak Police Operation Unfolded
According to the official police statement, a joint team of the district police and the CTD moved into the Charpara area at noon on 22 October 2026 after militants set up a blockade there the previous night. The operation was led by the deputy superintendents for Banda Daud Shah and the CTD, and included bomb-disposal personnel, a drone team, Rescue 15 staff and the Rapid Response Force.
The team raided the hideout of militant commander Qaiser Iqbal in the Jala Charpara locality of Banda Daud Shah tehsil. The Karak CTD DSP martyred in Thursday’s exchange was leading the CTD contingent that moved in alongside the district police. The moment the raiding party closed in, the militants opened heavy fire, triggering an intense exchange that turned the intelligence-based operation into a deadly confrontation.
Police said two militants were also killed in the retaliatory fire. The search operation was still continuing when the force issued its first account of the incident.
The Martyred Officers
The Karak CTD DSP martyred in the clash, Imranuddin Khan, was a frontline officer known for taking the fight to militant networks in the southern districts of the province. His death is being described as a serious blow to counter-terrorism work in Karak, a district that sits along the southern corridor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where militant activity has resurged.
SHO Afzal Awan of Latambar police station, Constable Kazim and Head Constable Amjad of the bomb-disposal unit were martyred alongside him. The loss of two senior officers — the district’s CTD chief and a station house officer — in a single engagement has shaken the district’s law-enforcement machinery.
Funeral Honours and Official Tributes
Funeral prayers for the four martyred policemen were held in Karak with full official honours. A police contingent presented a salute, and the bodies were taken to the officers’ native villages for burial.
Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed, CTD Additional Inspector General Jawad Qamar, Kohat Regional Police Officer Shakir Hussain Dawar and Karak District Police Officer Niaz Muhammad attended the funeral prayers along with senior civil and military officials. Colleagues described the Karak CTD DSP martyred in Charpara as one of the province’s bravest counter-terrorism hands.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the attack and said the sacrifices of the province’s police would not be forgotten. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also paid tribute to the four men, praising their courage in the face of terrorism.
A Dangerous Belt for Police
Thursday’s Karak gunbattle is the latest in a run of violence against police in the Banda Daud Shah and Bahadur Khel belt. On 8 October, SHO Daud Khan of Banda Daud Shah police station and his gunman Farhad were martyred when gunmen fired on a police patrol in the New Karrapa area of the same tehsil. Around 15 October, police defused an improvised explosive device planted on a road at Dargah Shaheedan in Karak, reportedly intended to target police. A check post in Bahadur Khel was also attacked in an earlier incident in which three police personnel were martyred.
Attacks targeting police installations, patrols and personnel involved in counter-terrorism operations remain a major security challenge across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier this month, the provincial government raised compensation for martyred police personnel — reported at Rs17 million for martyrs of constable to inspector rank and Rs25 million for officers of DSP and SP rank, alongside higher injury and disability compensation.
What happens next in Karak turns on the search operation now under way and the detailed police account of how the team came under fire at the militants’ hideout. The province mourns the Karak CTD DSP martyred alongside three colleagues, even as officers return to one of the most dangerous beats in the country.
