Ali Zafar is done playing it safe. The singer and actor has revealed the name of his character in the upcoming web series Gangs of Khorasan — and it is nothing like the romantic heroes his fans grew up watching.
The character is Bostan Khan: a mysterious gangster at the centre of a mafia-themed web series that Zafar describes as the first project of its kind in Pakistan. It is the role that, in his own words, dared him to step far outside his comfort zone.
“I’ve waited for a character that would take me far from my comfort zone,” Zafar said in a fresh interview. “Out of all the scripts I read, Bostan Khan was the one that dared me. And I don’t walk away from a dare.” The quote, according to the report detailing his interview, explains why the usually careful star said yes to the crime series we reported on last month.
The new look: rugged, moustached and unrecognisable

The most visible sign of the transformation is Zafar’s new appearance. The actor recently offered fans a glimpse of his Bostan Khan look on social media — a rugged turn with a thick moustache and distinctive glasses that has left longtime followers doing a double take.
The shift from the clean-cut leading man of his film years is deliberate. The role marks a significant departure from the lighter, romantic characters that shaped much of his acting career, and gives him an opportunity to explore a darker, more intense screen persona.
Zafar himself introduced the character in a bold first-person social media post that has been widely shared: “Warned you not to mess with me. My world. My rules. I AM BOSTAAN KHAN!”
A star-studded cast joins the crime saga

Gangs of Khorasan brings together one of the strongest ensemble casts seen in a Pakistani series in recent years. Joining Ali Zafar are Feroze Khan, Humaima Malick, Sonya Hussyn and Syed Jibran.
Feroze Khan has built a huge following through television dramas including Khaani, Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 and Akhara. Humaima Malick, who earned wider recognition through Shoaib Mansoor’s film Bol (2011) and later appeared in The Legend of Maula Jatt, is returning to screens after a break. Sonya Hussyn has built a reputation for challenging roles in projects such as Aisi Hai Tanhai, Ishq Zahe Naseeb and Deemak, while Syed Jibran remains a familiar television face with credits including Chup Raho, Neem and Pagal Khana.
Production details are still emerging. Anas Ali is producing the series, with direction associated with Hamza Ansari, though the production has yet to reveal the full storyline, individual character details, the streaming platform or a release date — the initial casting announcement reports left fans hungry for.
Why this role matters for Ali Zafar’s career

The announcement matters because it is a genuine return to serious acting. Zafar’s last major live-action role as a leading actor was Teefa in Trouble (2018), opposite Maya Ali — a commercial success that also marked his debut as a film producer and writer. He later lent his voice to the animated film Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God (2023).
Since then, he has stayed mostly within music, concerts and stage shows. The crime-series project also completes a journey back to home turf: Zafar began as an actor on Pakistani television, broke through as a musician with his 2003 debut album Huqa Pani and its chart-topping single Channo, then conquered Bollywood with Tere Bin Laden (2010), Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Chashme Baddoor and Dear Zindagi.
For a man who has five Lux Style Awards and a Pride of Performance (awarded 23 March 2021) to his name, Bostan Khan is not just another role — it is the boldest reinvention of a career that has thrived on reinvention. Pakistan’s film releases and box office landscape may be unpredictable, but a gangster drama led by Ali Zafar in a moustache and glasses is one bet few fans are willing to miss.
