Thal Desert Rally 2026: Four Stock Category Winners Crowned as Prepared Races Take Over on Final Day

The Thal Desert Rally 2026 has delivered its first champions. Four drivers topped the Stock categories on Saturday after a gruelling run of roughly 200 kilometres through the deserts of South Punjab, and the focus now shifts to the Prepared category races on the final day of the event.

The 11th edition of the Thal Desert Rally 2026 runs from 5 to 8 November across Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu and Layyah. Organised by the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP), the four-day festival combines off-road racing on a 210-kilometre track with cultural celebrations, and it closes on Sunday evening with the prize distribution ceremony in Muzaffargarh.

A total of 52 racers took part in Saturday’s Stock competition, and four drivers emerged as winners in their respective categories. Rab Nawaz Joyia recorded the fastest time of the four, finishing in 2 hours and 26 minutes to win Stock B. Syed Asif Imam won Stock A in 2 hours and 35 minutes, Falak Sher Baloch took Stock D in 2 hours and 33 minutes, and Hassan Jhandir won Stock C in 2 hours and 36 minutes.

The reported times are rounded and provisional, pending confirmation through the official results sheet. Joyia’s win continues a strong weekend for the driver: he was also the fastest in Friday’s Stock qualifying round, completing the qualifying course in 1 minute and 50 seconds, with Syed Asif Imam qualifying second.

The Thal Desert Rally 2026 Stock races are run in production-based vehicles with only limited modifications, so the challenge is as much about managing the desert as it is about outright speed. Shifting dunes, extreme heat and almost no landmarks to navigate by make the route one of the toughest tests in Pakistani motorsport.

Saturday was not without drama. A jeep overturned after a tyre burst, leaving one person with minor injuries. Two separate incidents involved the vehicles of Azmeer Saranjam and Zubair Hayat, but everyone involved was cleared with only minor injuries.

Rescue 1122 had prepared for exactly this kind of day. The service deployed 125 rescuers and 19 emergency vehicles along the rally route, with personnel drawn from Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Dera Ghazi Khan and Taunsa Sharif. The incidents were a reminder of how quickly a competitive run across unpredictable desert terrain can turn into an emergency, and how much of the event’s safety depends on the rescue teams stationed along the course.

Women racers and the Thal Mela keep the crowds coming

Three women were among Saturday’s 52 racers: Aila Malik, Ambreen Faraz and Syed Rahat Riaz. Their presence continues a growing tradition at the Thal event. Last year, Salma Marwat won the prepared women’s category while Ambreen Faraz led the stock women’s category.

Away from the track, the Thal Mela gave spectators plenty to enjoy. Cultural festivities were held around Head Muhammad Wala and the Chhanga Manga Dune, with traditional jhoomar performances, camel and bull races, kabaddi competitions and a livestock exhibition. Food stalls, local handicrafts and exhibitions of regional craftsmanship drew visitors from across South Punjab, and tent pegging, known locally as Neza Bazi, was held on Saturday.

TDCP introduced the rally in November 2016, following the success of the Cholistan Jeep Rally, after residents of South Punjab asked for a rally in their own desert landscape. A decade on, that local connection remains at the heart of the event, which TDCP says aims to promote adventure tourism, showcase the region’s cultural heritage and support the local economy.

Sunday brings the fastest machines of the weekend. The Prepared category, featuring modified vehicles, takes centre stage, with Faisal Shadi Khel entering as the fastest qualifier. Muhammad Raza Saeed and Mir Nadir Magsi are his closest challengers, while Sahibzada Sultan and Mohammad Jaffar Magsi are also among the leading contenders.

The women’s category races, dirt bikes, quad bikes and 6×6 competitions follow in the afternoon, before the weekend closes with the prize distribution ceremony in Muzaffargarh at 8pm. A total prize pool of Rs 6 million will be shared among the winning drivers and athletes.

Last year, Faisal Shadi Khel won Prepared A ahead of Mir Nadir Magsi and Muhammad Raza Saeed, and the same three names head the field again this year. If qualifying form holds, the final day of the Thal Desert Rally 2026 should produce a familiar fight at the front — and a fitting finish to ten years of desert racing in the Thal.
