PTA Mobile Registration 2026: How to Register Your Phone

If you brought a phone from abroad or bought one from the grey market, PTA mobile registration is the one task you cannot skip. Without it, your handset will be blocked from Pakistani networks. This guide explains the PTA mobile registration process step by step, as it works in October 2026, so you can get your device approved without paying a fake agent a single rupee.
Every phone used on a Pakistani network must be registered through the PTA’s Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). Phones bought from authorised local sellers are usually already registered, but any handset brought in by a traveller or bought from an unofficial importer gets a 60-day grace period from the day it first connects to a local network. After that, DIRBS blocks the phone from calls, SMS and mobile data (Wi-Fi keeps working).
PTA Mobile Registration: Step-by-Step Process
Follow these steps in order. The whole process is free to start; only the FBR taxes and duties on imported handsets cost money.
Step 1: Find your IMEI number
Your IMEI is a unique 15-digit number that identifies your device. Dial *#06# and the number appears on screen. You can also find it under Settings → About Phone, or on the original box. A dual-SIM phone has two IMEIs — note both, because you must register each one.
Step 2: Check if your phone is already registered
Before doing anything, confirm your device status. The fastest method is to send your 15-digit IMEI as an SMS to 8484. The PTA replies with the device status — compliant (registered), non-compliant (registration required) or blocked — along with the brand, model and the date the device first registered on a Pakistani network. You can also check free on the DIRBS web portal or the official DIRBS mobile app. If the result says compliant, you are done and need no registration.
Step 3: Create an account on the DIRBS portal
Go to the official portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk and open the device registration section (the /drs portal). Click Sign Up and choose your user type — Pakistani Citizen (CNIC) or Foreigner (Passport). Enter your name, CNIC or passport number, email and phone number, then verify through the OTP or email activation link.
Step 4: Apply for a Certificate of Compliance (CoC)
Log in and select Apply for CoC (Certificate of Compliance). Enter your IMEI number(s) and personal details. Choose “Traveled Abroad” if you are registering under the baggage rule with a passport, or “Local User” if you are registering with a CNIC. Double-check the IMEI digits — one wrong digit generates the wrong tax figure.
Step 5: Generate your PSID and pay the tax
The system calculates your applicable tax and generates a PSID (Payment Slip ID), a long payment reference number. You can pay it through internet banking (HBL, UBL, Meezan, Allied — Bill Payments → Government → FBR → PSID), any ATM (Government Payments), mobile wallets (Easypaisa or JazzCash via the FBR/PSID option), or at a bank branch with the PSID number.
Step 6: Get confirmation
After payment, the PTA usually approves registration within 2 to 4 working days. You will receive an SMS and email confirmation. Dial *8484# from your phone to confirm the device now shows as compliant. Weekend or holiday payments can take up to 48 hours to reflect, so plan accordingly.
USSD method: register with *8484#
If you prefer not to use the website, you can start the process by dialling *8484# from a local SIM. Select the option for Pakistani citizens or foreigners, say whether it is your first device, enter your CNIC or passport number, provide the number of SIM slots and the IMEI numbers, and confirm the request. A confirmation message arrives if your details are correct. For the latest updates, the PTA helpline 051-9207059 can also guide you.
Temporary registration for visitors
Eligible overseas Pakistanis and foreign visitors can use the temporary registration facility for one personal handset for up to 120 days per visit. The phone registers automatically when a Pakistani SIM is inserted — no tax is charged during this window. If you stay longer, complete the full PTA mobile registration before the window closes, or the phone will be blocked.
Avoid fake registration agents
Only use official PTA and FBR channels for your PTA mobile registration. Fake “PTA registration services” on social media charge heavy fees, harvest your CNIC and IMEI details, and sometimes submit nothing at all. The DIRBS portal and the 8484 SMS service are free, and paying the PSID at a bank costs nothing extra. Never share your CNIC copy or passport details with an unverified agent.

FAQs
1. How long does PTA mobile registration take?
Most PTA mobile registration applications are approved within 2 to 4 working days after the PSID payment reflects in the system. Payments made on weekends or public holidays can take up to 48 hours to reflect.
2. Is PTA registration free?
The registration process itself carries no separate PTA processing fee, but FBR duties and taxes apply to imported devices. Checking your status via 8484 or the DIRBS portal is completely free.
3. Can I register a phone on someone else’s CNIC?
No. The CNIC or passport used must belong to the person registering the device, and the PTA cross-checks SIM registration records against the identity used.
4. What happens if my phone gets blocked?
A blocked handset loses calls, SMS and mobile data on Pakistani SIMs, though Wi-Fi keeps working. You can unblock it by completing registration and paying the applicable tax.
5. Do I need to register both IMEIs of a dual-SIM phone?
Yes. Register both IMEIs, otherwise the unregistered slot can trigger a block on the device.
