OpenAI is bringing advertising to ChatGPT users in Pakistan. The artificial intelligence company has expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, taking the total number of markets where sponsored messages appear inside the chatbot to 89.
The announcement, made this week, marks one of the biggest steps yet in OpenAI’s push to turn ChatGPT into a serious advertising platform. For millions of Pakistanis who use the free version of ChatGPT for study, work and everyday questions, sponsored content may soon start appearing alongside answers.
ChatGPT ads expand to 89 countries worldwide
OpenAI said the latest rollout adds 26 new markets to its advertising programme. Fourteen of them are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, which join earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil. The rest span Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia — among them Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
With this expansion, ChatGPT advertising is now available in 89 countries. The company first began testing ads in the United States earlier this year, and the programme has grown fast: more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on the platform since testing began, up from about 20,000 in late August.
OpenAI has said the advertising push helps support free and low-cost access to ChatGPT for people around the world. The company puts ChatGPT’s weekly audience at more than 1.2 billion people, making it one of the largest digital audiences on the planet.
Only free users will see ads in Pakistan
For users in Pakistan, the key detail is who sees the ads and who does not. Advertisements will appear only on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Subscribers to Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans will continue to use the platform without any advertising.
OpenAI has previously said that ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from the answers the chatbot gives. The company has also stressed that advertisers do not get access to users’ private conversations and that it does not sell customer data.
Unlike conventional digital advertising, ChatGPT ads are designed to reach people while they are exploring products and services through conversation — asking follow-up questions, comparing options and narrowing down their choices. Someone planning meals for marathon training, for instance, might see an ad for a grocery delivery service while looking for recipes.
What ChatGPT advertising means for Pakistani businesses
For Pakistani brands and digital agencies, the expansion opens a new channel to reach the millions of people who use ChatGPT for search, study and work. Businesses in the newly added markets can buy ads through OpenAI’s technology partners or manage campaigns themselves using the company’s self-service Ads Manager.
Ads Manager was first opened in the United States in May, allowing businesses to set budgets and bids, launch campaigns and track performance from a single portal. The same self-service route is now available to advertisers in Pakistan.
OpenAI is also developing AI-powered advertising tools and has begun testing business-sponsored AI agents with selected advertisers in the United States. Earlier this month, the company scheduled a US trial of visual advertising during ChatGPT image generation, with ads displayed separately from users’ generated pictures.
A billion-dollar ad business in the making
The speed of the rollout shows how central advertising has become to OpenAI’s business plans. In August, the company said its advertising business had reached an annualised revenue run rate of $1 billion — less than 200 days after launch. Reports suggest the ad push is part of OpenAI’s effort to build a bigger revenue base, including preparations for a possible initial public offering.
The mix of markets in this expansion shows how widely OpenAI is spreading its advertising net: emerging economies such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Cambodia are placed alongside larger and more established digital advertising markets in a single rollout.
For Pakistani users on the free plan, sponsored content may start appearing alongside answers in the coming days. For local businesses, it is a new way to introduce products at the moment people are still evaluating their options — the very point where a well-placed suggestion can turn into a sale.
