Rohit Sharma 2026: Career, Records and Latest News
Rohit Sharma has spent 2026 reminding everyone why he is one of the great white-ball openers. After a slow start to the year, the former India captain roared back with back-to-back ODI centuries against the West Indies, joining the 12,000-run club and keeping his 2027 World Cup dream alive. This guide covers the 2026 season in full: the records, the Mumbai Indians captaincy talk and the latest news as of 15 October 2026.
Rohit Sharma’s 12,000 ODI Runs and West Indies Centuries
The highlight of the year was the ODI series against West Indies in October 2026. After scores of 138 at Lord’s earlier in the season and a century-laden finish, he reached 12,000 ODI runs during a 101 from 76 balls at Guwahati, becoming only the seventh batter in ODI history to the mark. Across 2026 he has scored 604 runs in ODIs, finishing the year as India’s second-highest run-getter in the format behind Shubman Gill, with 23 sixes, the most of India’s veteran batters. His late-season surge, 138, 32 and 101 in three innings, lifted his 2026 average to 46.54 with a strike rate of 104.06.
Mumbai Indians Captaincy Talk
Off the field, he has dominated headlines over the Mumbai Indians captaincy. Reports ahead of IPL 2027 suggest the franchise is considering handing the leadership back to the man who guided them to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, after three mixed seasons under Hardik Pandya. One report, however, quoted the franchise denying that any internal discussions had taken place. With IPL 2027 potentially his final season and the 2027 World Cup in South Africa on the horizon, his next moves will be watched closely across the cricket world.
Career Records and White-Ball Legacy
Across all international cricket, he has scored 20,427 runs at an average of 42.46, complete to September 2026. He holds the highest individual ODI score ever, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, along with three ODI double centuries, a feat no one else has achieved. Like Virat Kohli, he played his last Test and his last T20I, retiring from both formats, and now focuses solely on ODIs, where his captaincy record in white-ball cricket remains among the best. Beyond the numbers, his relaxed leadership and effortless six-hitting have made him one of the most loved figures in the modern game. His sharp reading of match situations and calm presence in the dressing room have earned him the respect of teammates and opponents alike, making 2026 yet another reminder of his enduring class.
