PSL 12 Retention Deadline Set: Franchises Can Keep Seven Players, Auction on 23 January

PSL franchises have just ten weeks to decide the core of their teams — and there is a catch that will put at least one star player back into the auction pool.

The Pakistan Super League’s retention rules for season 12 are now final. All eight franchises have agreed that the deadline to submit player retention lists is 13 January 2027, ten days before the PSL 12 player auction on 23 January. Each team can keep a maximum of seven players — but any franchise that retains the full seven must release one player from the highest price category of the previous auction back into the general pool.

The framework was unanimously agreed at a tournament operations workshop held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on 30 October, led by PSL chief executive Salman Naseer. Representatives of all eight franchises — Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindiz — signed off on every clause of the new auction rules.

What the PSL 12 retention rules mean for every franchise

Under the agreed rules, each franchise can retain up to seven players from its existing squad, including its direct signing. That cap sits inside a new two-year contract cycle designed to give teams stability while keeping the auction meaningful.

The twist is deliberate: the league wants star talent moving. A franchise that wants to keep all seven of its players cannot simply sit on its squad — it must give up the player who commanded the highest price at the previous auction. That single condition guarantees that the January auction will feature genuine marquee names rather than only fringe picks, and it forces even the most settled teams to make a difficult call before the retention deadline.

The retention deadline of 13 January has been scheduled deliberately around the domestic calendar. It falls after the completion of the National T20 Silver tournament and during the National T20 Gold competition, giving franchises one last live look at emerging talent before they lock in their lists. For fans tracking every move, our PSL 2027 teams and schedule guide carries the full season picture.

Auction date, salary cap and the direct-signing window

The PSL 12 player auction on 23 January 2027 will be only the second player auction in the league’s history — the auction model replaced the old draft system when the league expanded to eight teams. Every clause of the auction rulebook was reviewed line by line at the Lahore workshop before the franchises adopted it unanimously.

The money has been settled too. Each franchise will enter the auction with a salary cap of PKR 45 crore (around USD 1.6 million). That ceiling rises to PKR 50.5 crore for any franchise that makes a direct signing for PSL 12, retains its direct signing from last season, or does both. And to keep the market healthy, every team must spend at least PKR 36.5 crore (around USD 1.3 million) on its squad — nobody is allowed to sit out the bidding.

Alongside retentions, the direct signing window remains open until 23 November 2026. Each franchise may sign one marquee player directly — the catch being that the player must not have featured in PSL 10 or PSL 11. It is a route designed to bring fresh overseas stars into the league, and with the window closing in a little over three weeks, expect announcements to start landing soon.

Why the unanimous vote matters

The workshop was described as the most comprehensive collective engagement between the league and its franchise partners in the current cycle. Discussions covered direct signings, retentions, trade windows, squad sizes and salary caps — and every franchise agreed every major parameter.

That unanimity matters because the eight-team era has put real pressure on squad building. With more teams chasing the same pool of local talent, the retention rules had to balance two things: rewarding teams that develop players, and keeping the auction competitive enough to be worth watching. The seven-player cap with the highest-tier release condition is the league’s answer — franchises keep their identity, but the auction keeps its drama.

PSL CEO Salman Naseer welcomed what he called the open discussions and the unanimous support shown by all eight franchises. The tone from Lahore suggests the league’s administration and its team owners are reading from the same page as the season builds toward March.

PSL 12 key dates at a glance

With the framework locked in, the road to the new season now has firm milestones. The PSL 12 dates are set for 18 March to 2 May 2027, returning to the eight-team format for a second consecutive season. Before a ball is bowled, the calendar runs like this: the direct signing window closes on 23 November 2026, the trade window operates alongside, player retentions must be confirmed by 13 January 2027, and the PSL 12 player auction follows on 23 January 2027 — the night the new squads take shape.

For franchises, the clock is already ticking: lock in a direct signing before 23 November, weigh the seven-player retention call before 13 January, and decide which highest-category star — if any — is worth sacrificing to keep the rest of the core. January is going to be a busy month for PSL fans.
