The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has left former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton out of its commentary team for the ongoing men’s ODI tri-series, two months after the pair’s televised interview with the sons of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan triggered a standoff between the board and Sky Sports. The omission of two of world cricket’s most recognisable broadcast voices from the six-member panel has become one of the biggest talking points of the Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka tri-series, which is being played in Rawalpindi and Lahore from October 18 to 31. For a board hosting two touring teams, the Atherton Hussain commentary absence is a bold and closely watched call.
Who Made the Atherton Hussain Commentary Panel — and Who Didn’t
The PCB announced a six-member commentary line-up for the tri-series featuring former Pakistan internationals Waqar Younis, Aamir Sohail, Bazid Khan and Urooj Mumtaz, alongside Sri Lanka’s Roshan Abeysinghe and England’s Mark Butcher. The names that drew the most attention, however, were the ones missing from the list. Both Atherton and Hussain were part of the broadcast team when England last toured Pakistan for a three-Test series in October 2024, and the Atherton Hussain commentary combination has been a fixture of major ICC events and bilateral series around the world for years.
The PCB has not provided any official reason for their absence from the assignment. But the timing is impossible to ignore: the Atherton Hussain commentary snub arrives just two months after the interview that put the two broadcasters on a collision course with the board and the Pakistan government.
The Lord’s Interview That Sparked the Row
During the Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan in August 2026, Sky Sports broadcast an 18-minute interview conducted by Atherton with Kasim and Sulaiman Khan, the sons of Imran Khan, who has been in jail in Pakistan since 2023. The segment raised concerns about the former Pakistan captain and World Cup-winning cricketer’s deteriorating health in prison, and it was this broadcast that set in motion the chain of events behind the Atherton Hussain commentary row now dominating the tri-series conversation. His sons alleged that the authorities were “blatantly trying to kill him” through neglect and isolation, claimed he spends more than 23 hours a day alone in a small cell, and said the Pakistan authorities had refused to grant them visas on “technical grounds”. The Pakistan government denied those claims, saying it had not barred Imran’s relatives, lawyers or doctors from meeting him.
The PCB reacted strongly to what it considered the political nature of the broadcast. The board lodged a formal complaint with Sky Sports, and the situation reportedly escalated to the point where Pakistan threatened to keep its players off the field for the afternoon session in protest. Sky Sports went ahead with the interview anyway, though Pakistan’s state broadcaster PTV censored the segment and played advertisements in its place.
Atherton’s Defence: ‘Airbrush Imran Almost Out of Existence’
Atherton later addressed the controversy on a podcast with Hussain, defending his decision to conduct the interview and arguing that the Pakistani state was attempting to “airbrush Imran almost out of existence”. The remarks kept the row alive well beyond the Lord’s Test, and with the latest Atherton Hussain commentary omission landing in the middle of a home tri-series, the fallout shows no sign of fading.
For now, the two broadcasters will be watching the series from the sidelines rather than calling it. The PCB’s six-member panel began its duties with the tournament opener between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi, where Salman Agha’s century and a late collapse by the visitors sealed a 37-run win for the hosts. Whether the Atherton Hussain commentary pairing returns to Pakistan’s broadcast box for future home series will be one of the subplots to watch as the tournament — and the controversy — plays out.
