Maryam Nawaz in Attock: CM Inaugurates 127 Development Projects Worth Rs23 Billion

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited Attock on Tuesday, where she inaugurated 127 development projects worth Rs23 billion in a single day. The visit, which drew large crowds and dominated social media trends across Pakistan, combined road infrastructure announcements with an education package for students and a sharp political message aimed at her critics.

The Maryam Nawaz Attock visit is the latest in a series of high-profile district tours the chief minister has been undertaking, and the sheer scale of the announcements — 127 schemes in one district, in one day — made it one of the biggest development events of her current tenure. Here is everything that was announced, in plain detail.

The headline figure of the day was the inauguration of 127 development projects worth Rs23 billion across Attock district. Of these, 59 are road construction and rehabilitation projects — the largest single component of the package.

Among the named road schemes are the Fateh Jang–Pindi Gheb Road, the Dhok Lahm–Jhamat Road and the Mithial Chowk–Dhok Pathan Road, covering some of the district’s busiest rural and urban routes. According to the reporting of the visit, the chief minister said billions of rupees of additional work was still under way to resolve Attock’s civic problems, and pointed to the city’s flooding after recent rainfall as one of the issues the projects are meant to fix.

She also noted that Attock’s main market had been beautified to the point that it had, in her words, surpassed Lahore’s Liberty Market — a claim that drew cheers from the crowd and wide coverage on local news channels.

Laptops, Honhaar scholarships and IT labs for students

The education announcements were the second pillar of the Maryam Nawaz Attock visit. At a ceremony at COMSATS University Attock, the chief minister distributed laptops and Honhaar scholarships to students from Rawalpindi and Attock — part of the Punjab government’s ongoing push to expand digital access in higher education.

According to a pre-visit announcement carried by the media, the education package for the district also includes new information technology laboratories at four colleges across Attock, the introduction of BS degree programmes at different colleges in the district, and pink buses for degree colleges to ease students’ transport problems.

The Honhaar Scholarship Programme provides financial assistance to deserving students in higher education, while the laptop scheme is meant to support digital learning, research and academic work. Students can find programme details and eligibility criteria through the Punjab Higher Education Department.

The COMSATS speech: autographs, the public and “rivers of fire”

Addressing students at COMSATS University, Maryam Nawaz recounted that during the inauguration of the Gala Mandi, a young girl had crossed the crowd to approach her for an autograph. She said people had expected her to be questioned by the public after completing a year as chief minister — but instead, she said, people had traditionally been pushed down from stages while she considered staying among the people and keeping direct contact with them important.

In a personal, emotional passage of the speech, she said people should not fear difficulties or lose courage. One had to pass through “rivers of fire” and endure imprisonment, she said, and should therefore not lose heart — adding that the satisfaction gained from serving the people could not be found anywhere else.

Defamation notice to Chaudhry Salik over corruption claims

The most politically charged moment of the Maryam Nawaz Attock visit came when the chief minister turned to the corruption allegations levelled against her. She said that if anyone could prove she had committed corruption of even a single rupee, she would be answerable before Allah and the people.

She then announced that she would send a defamation notice to Federal Minister Chaudhry Salik. If he had evidence, she said, he should present it — otherwise she would take him to court. “You are a federal minister; do not make allegations, present evidence,” she said, adding that the notice was being sent.

She also responded to Chaudhry Salik’s claim that the best government had been that of Pervez Elahi, saying that when she visited Gujrat during the rains, there had been so much water that her car was submerged. And she took a swipe at his continued role in government: if the government was so corrupt, she asked, why was Chaudhry Salik serving as a minister?

The chief minister added that she appointed officers in Punjab on merit and listened to no one on appointments, arguing that anyone appointed through recommendations and favouritism would ruin the country and its people.

Why the Attock visit matters

The Maryam Nawaz Attock visit arrives as the Punjab government presses ahead with its Punjab Development Programme, under which large infrastructure and civic schemes are being rolled out district by district. Attock’s inclusion with a Rs23 billion package puts it among the bigger single-day district announcements this year.

For context, the chief minister has been using district visits to pair physical infrastructure with education and welfare announcements — a pattern also visible in her youth skills training push for Punjab and the Rs2 trillion Punjab PIVOT economic plan.

For Attock’s residents, the test will be delivery: whether the 127 projects announced on Tuesday are completed on time and to the quality standards promised. The chief minister’s political opponents will be watching the same thing. But for one day at least, Attock was the centre of Punjab’s development story — and the 127 development projects worth Rs23 billion and the education package announced for the district made sure of that.
