HEC Scholarships 2026: Latest Local and Foreign Programmes
HEC scholarships remain the single biggest funding channel for Pakistani students, and October 2026 brings a cluster of closing deadlines. From the fully funded Commonwealth Scholarship to the US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor PhD programme and need-based awards at local universities, this guide lists every active HEC-routed opportunity — verified on 15 October 2026.
The Higher Education Commission acts as Pakistan’s nominating agency for several foreign awards and runs its own local schemes through participating universities. Deadlines are strict, and most HEC awards require the HAT test, so plan accordingly.
HEC Scholarships: Foreign Awards Closing in October 2026
The Commonwealth Scholarship 2027, routed through HEC, closes 20 October 2026 (HEC portal closes at 4:00 pm Pakistan time). It funds master’s and PhD study in the UK with tuition fees, return air travel and a monthly stipend of £1,347 outside London or £1,652 in London, plus allowances such as warm clothing and thesis grants for eligible scholars. Applicants need Pakistani or AJK nationality, 16 years of education with a first division or equivalent for master’s (postgraduate qualifications for PhD), a HAT score of at least 60, and a study plan aligned with the Commonwealth’s development priorities. Apply on both the HEC scholarship portal and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s website.
The US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor PhD Scholarship closes 30 October 2026 for the Spring/Summer 2027 intake, with a Fall 2027 round closing 30 March 2027. It funds doctoral study at top-100 QS-ranked US universities: full tuition plus an annual stipend of about USD 19,000 and health insurance up to USD 2,000 per year for top-50 universities, and tuition support up to USD 12,000 per year plus living and insurance support for universities ranked 51–100. Requirements include 16 or 18 years of education, Pakistani or AJK nationality, a GRE score of 300 or HAT of 60 percent, an age limit of 35 (40 for specified faculty and researchers), and a PhD admission offer from an eligible university.
Local HEC Awards and Fellowships
The HEC Need-Based Scholarship runs through participating universities, each setting its own deadline. COMSATS University Islamabad’s Lahore campus closed its Fall 2026 round on 15 October 2026: open-merit BS students of any batch with family income below the poverty threshold could apply for fee coverage plus a Rs 6,000 monthly stipend. Students elsewhere should contact their university’s Student Financial Aid Office, since HEC sets no single national date.
The Quaid-e-Azam Memorial Fellowship for full-time PhD students in Pakistan closes 30 October 2026. Note that the large undergraduate scheme now listed as BISP Scholarships for Undergraduates currently shows its portal as closed on HEC’s own site, with no new 2026 round announced — treat unverified deadline claims on social media with caution.
The HAT Test: Your Gateway Requirement
Several HEC scholarships require the Higher Education Aptitude Test with a minimum score of 60. Register for the HAT early through HEC, since test slots fill up and scholarship deadlines will not wait for a retake. A strong HAT score also strengthens applications where it is not strictly mandatory.

How to Apply Successfully
Shortlist awards by eligibility first — nationality, degree years, test scores and age. Prepare transcripts, CNIC, domicile, recommendation letters and a research proposal in advance. Submit through the official HEC portal and, where required, the foreign commission’s portal too. Finish at least a day before closing and save every receipt.
Time your scholarship applications with your degree plans using our university admissions 2026 guide. Missing the 20 October Commonwealth deadline means waiting a full year for the next cycle.
