Scarlett Johansson has finally said something about her mystery role in Scarlett Johansson Batman Part II — and her answer has only deepened the mystery. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while promoting her new film Paper Tiger, the actress described the part as the hardest she has taken on in years, saying it gave her “existential angst” and was “very hard to figure out”.
Johansson was asked which recent job had pushed her furthest outside her comfort zone. She did not hesitate. “Probably the role in The Batman,” she said, “because it gave me a lot of existential angst for some reason.” She added that the part was “hard to crack it” — and then, firmly, “That’s all I can say about it.”
It is the first time Johansson has spoken at any length about the Scarlett Johansson Batman Part II role since director Matt Reeves announced her casting on X on 14 May 2026. Reeves gave no character name at the time, and neither Warner Bros. nor DC Studios has named one since. Six months later, Johansson’s own words remain the only thing on the record about who she is playing.
A difficult part, but no name attached
What Johansson said is best read as a performance note rather than a clue. She described the difficulty of finding a character, not the character itself, and she closed the door the moment the question turned towards identity. She played Natasha Romanoff across 11 years of Marvel films, from Iron Man 2 in 2010 to Black Widow in 2021, so when she calls a comic-book part hard to crack, she is measuring it against a career spent knowing exactly what the job asks.
The Scarlett Johansson Batman Part II comments also suggest the part is no cameo. Actors do not spend that kind of thought on a walk-on role, and Johansson has done enough franchise work to know the difference. Beyond that, fans will have to keep guessing.
The name most often attached to her is Gilda Gold, later Gilda Dent, the wife of Gotham district attorney Harvey Dent. That idea came not from Warner Bros. but from Jeff Sneider at The InSneider, who reported it on 13 December 2025 citing an unnamed agency source; Gizmodo wrote it up the next day while labelling it speculation. No role for any of the 2026 cast additions has ever been officially announced.
Filming resumes after the October pause
Johansson’s comments arrive as The Batman Part II gets back on its feet after a difficult autumn. Filming began in the United Kingdom in June 2026, based at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with exteriors in London, Liverpool and Glasgow. In early October, with roughly two-thirds shot, Warner Bros. announced a temporary pause while Reeves dealt with a family matter.
On 16 October, DC Studios announced that Steven Soderbergh would complete the final weeks of principal photography, working alongside Reeves, who remains writer and director and will carry the film through post-production from Los Angeles. Reeves wrote on X: “I am not leaving The Batman Part II.” Pattinson then told GamesRadar+ on 26 October that cameras were running again: “I think they’re in production already. And I’m starting in a couple of days.”
The Scarlett Johansson Batman Part II shoot is therefore in its final stretch, with Soderbergh handling the London floor while Reeves oversees post-production. No wrap date has been announced, and the studio has not said how many shooting days remain.
Who is in the sequel — and when it arrives
Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, alongside Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell, Jayme Lawson and Gil Perez-Abraham. Reeves announced the new additions across 13 and 14 May 2026, naming Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Henry and Sebastian Koch — and not one of their characters.
Reeves has offered only the broadest hints about the story itself. Speaking with Josh Horowitz in September 2025, he described Part II as a Bruce Wayne story and said its antagonist had “never really been done in a movie before”. Neither comment places Johansson anywhere in particular, but they suggest a character with real weight in the film.
The Batman: Part II is scheduled to open in cinemas on Friday, 18 February 2028. The date has already moved twice — from 2 October 2026 to 1 October 2027 and then to 2028 — in a shift Reeves announced on 15 July 2026 alongside the first camera test footage. If filming runs into late November or December, Reeves will still have roughly fourteen months of post-production before release, and the Scarlett Johansson Batman Part II role will stay secret until Warner Bros. chooses to reveal it.
Why one short interview travelled so far
The reason the Scarlett Johansson Batman Part II interview travelled so far is simple: the film’s makers have given fans almost nothing else to work with. The casting was announced with no character, no costume image and no plot detail, and the production pause in October only added to the sense that this is a sequel being made behind firmly closed doors.
That secrecy has also kept the rumour mill running. Alongside the Gilda Dent theory, Sneider reported in June 2026 that Sebastian Stan would play Victor Zsasz and Brian Tyree Henry would play Harvey Dent — again unconfirmed — and a British prosthetics supplier briefly posted a photograph of head casts labelled Zsasz, Owl 3 and Koch before deleting it.
For now, then, Johansson’s description stands alone: a secret role, a difficult shoot, and an actress who found the part harder to crack than anything in her Marvel years. Until Reeves or Warner Bros. names her character, that is all anyone has — and it is more than enough to keep Gotham’s guessing game going until 2028.
