Pakistan’s digital transformation has earned a rare global honour: Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has been named “Industry Champion of the Year” at The Fast Mode Awards 2026 — an award presented to only one individual worldwide each year.
The Fast Mode, a global telecom media and research platform, announced the winners of its 2026 Leadership Awards on 3 November 2026. The “Industry Champion of the Year” category honours leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the telecommunications, satellite and data centre industries. This year, that one name is Pakistan’s IT minister.
What the award recognises

The honour is not for a single project but for the direction of an entire sector. In its statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication credited the recognition to Pakistan’s growing record in technology and connectivity over the past two years — spanning IT exports, telecom infrastructure, digital governance, artificial intelligence and international investment.
The numbers behind the claim are striking. Pakistan’s IT exports grew from $3.223 billion in fiscal year 2023-24 to a record $4.6 billion in FY2025-26, an annual growth rate of about 21 per cent. It is the kind of figure that award panels notice, and it gives the ministry’s statement genuine weight.
A record year for Pakistan’s telecom sector

The award lands at the end of a landmark year for Pakistan’s telecom industry. In March 2026, Pakistan held its largest-ever next-generation mobile services and 5G spectrum auction, selling 480MHz of spectrum for $509.6 million. By July 2026, commercial 5G services had been launched in four cities, putting Pakistan firmly on the global connectivity map.
The same period saw the federal cabinet approve Pakistan’s first National Artificial Intelligence Policy in July 2025, giving the country a formal framework for developing and adopting AI technologies. And in August 2026, Google completed its registration in Pakistan and opened its first office in the country — a milestone that signalled growing international confidence in the market.
Pakistan’s standing in global technology rankings has climbed alongside. The country improved its position by 27 places in the International Telecommunication Union’s ICT Development Index 2026, entered the top Tier 1 category of the ITU Global Cybersecurity Index, and achieved the “High” tier in the United Nations E-Government Development Index for the first time.
How big is the honour?

The Fast Mode Awards 2026 invited nominations from more than 500 companies across over 60 countries, competing across 11 categories for more than 80 awards. The awards honour breakthrough ideas and bold innovations in telecoms, with entries judged by an independent panel of editors, analysts and industry experts.
The Leadership awards recognise chief executives, chief technology officers, chief marketing officers and other top industry leaders — yet the “Industry Champion of the Year” title goes to a single person. Past honours of this kind have gone to figures such as TM Forum’s Nik Willetts, MobileX’s Peter Adderton and Banglalink’s Johan Buse, which shows the company Pakistan’s minister now keeps on the global stage.
What it means for Pakistan

For Pakistan’s technology community, the award is validation — but also a challenge. International recognition of this kind raises expectations: investors, tech companies and talent watch how a country follows through after the trophy is handed over.
The ministry’s statement frames the award as proof that Pakistan’s digital transformation is on the right track. With 5G rolling out, IT exports at record levels and global tech companies setting up in the country, the sector has momentum. The test now is whether that momentum turns into sustained growth — and whether the next global award finds Pakistan even further up the rankings.
