Who Is Named in the Blinkit Reliance Food Probe

The Blinkit Reliance food probe names high-profile executives. Among those identified are Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa (listed in some reports as Arbinder Singh Dhinsa, Director, Blinkit Commerce), V Subramaniam, Whole-time Director of Reliance Consumer Products Ltd, and officials from Reliance Retail including warehouse management.

The FIR also names Deepak Singh of Blinkit Commerce, Abid Shaikh of Zomato Hyperpure, and disposal agency operators and local suppliers, including Babar Miya Ahmed Siddiqui of B K Dispose and Gulzar Abdul Khan, a supplier from Bhiwandi.

Reliance and Blinkit did not immediately respond to requests for comment when the probe was reported.

What the Blinkit Reliance Food Probe Alleged

Maharashtra’s FDA said its officials visited warehouses of Reliance Retail, Reliance Consumer, and Zomato Hyperpure, and that company officials could not provide verifiable proof that disposal of expired food was actually carried out by their contractors. “The disposal agencies do not destroy the stock,” the case document alleged.

In the case of a Zomato Hyperpure warehouse, a company representative named a contractor as its disposal agency which FDA officials could not trace. The probe centres on allegations that expired, damaged, or consumer-rejected food products meant for destruction were diverted back into the market.

During the crackdown, the FDA seized food stock worth 48 lakh rupees across districts.

The Regulator Behind the Blinkit Reliance Food Probe

The Blinkit Reliance food probe is being led by Tukaram Mundhe, 51, chief of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration. Under Mundhe, the state agency has conducted one of India’s most aggressive food safety crackdowns, shutting down some of Mumbai’s most popular eateries as well as outlets of Domino’s and Pizza Hut for poor hygiene, and suspending the permit of a McDonald’s outlet.

“Any attempt to divert expired, damaged or consumer-rejected food products meant for destruction back into the market is a serious matter that demands strict scrutiny and accountability,” Mundhe told Reuters. “No company, brand, business or individual is above the law when it comes to food safety.”

The latest case involves large retail and quick-commerce companies that sell to millions of households in the world’s most populous country.

Wider Crackdown on E-Commerce and Dark Stores

The Blinkit Reliance food probe sits within a broader regulatory push. India’s top food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, is preparing tighter rules for quick-delivery platforms including Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Amazon Now.

According to FSSAI chief executive Rajit Punhani, upcoming regulations are expected to mandate clear display of manufacturing dates, expiry dates, and batch numbers on all online food listings. Platforms will also be held responsible for misleading manufacturer claims, while dark kitchens and dark stores will face stricter oversight on photographs, operational addresses, and storage conditions for items like frozen goods.

Over recent months, federal and state enforcement agencies have conducted roughly 700,000 inspections between April and September, resulting in a five- to sixfold increase in prosecutions against e-commerce companies for violations involving misbranding, prohibited items, and invalid licenses.

What Happens Next in the Blinkit Reliance Food Probe

The FIR sets the stage for a formal criminal investigation. Companies named in the probe have so far not issued detailed public responses. Industry observers note that prominent corporations including PepsiCo, Reliance Consumer Products, and Monster Beverage have begun pushing back through legal challenges in related regulatory disputes, recently securing an early procedural win regarding response opportunities.

FSSAI chief Punhani has expressed confidence the regulator will prevail, citing strong consumer support and a nationwide drive for transparent, safe standards in digital retail and food packaging.

For India’s quick-commerce sector, which has grown explosively on the promise of 10-minute delivery, the probe marks a turning point toward regulatory accountability.
