Pakistan Air Force: Aircraft, Ranks and How to Join the PAF

The Pakistan Air Force is one of the most respected air arms in the region, with a history stretching back to the country’s independence and a fleet that blends domestically produced fighters with advanced imported platforms. Whether you want to understand its aircraft, its rank structure, or how to join, this guide covers the essentials.
Pakistan Air Force Aircraft: The Current Fleet
The PAF’s frontline fighter fleet is built around three main types. The JF-17 Thunder, developed jointly by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China, is the backbone — over 120 in service, with the Block 3 variant carrying an AESA radar, helmet-mounted display and modern avionics. The F-16 Fighting Falcon (around 44 aircraft) remains a key multirole platform, with US-approved support keeping the fleet flying. The Chengdu J-10C, a 4.5-generation fighter with AESA radar and long-range PL-15 missiles, was inducted from 2022 and is widely regarded as the PAF’s most capable air-superiority asset.
Older Mirage III/5 and F-7 fleets are being progressively retired. Looking ahead, the PAF has confirmed plans for additional J-10CE fighters and upgraded JF-17 variants — including the JF-17 Block IV under the PFX programme — while a fifth-generation J-35AE acquisition is scoped for the early 2030s. Support assets include Saab 2000 Erieye and ZDK-03 airborne early warning aircraft, Il-78 aerial refuellers, C-130 Hercules transports, and K-8 and Mushshak trainers.
PAF Ranks: From Pilot Officer to Air Chief
PAF officer ranks run from Pilot Officer up through Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, Group Captain, Air Commodore, Air Vice Marshal, Air Marshal, and finally Air Chief Marshal — the professional head of the service. Airmen and airwomen serve in technical and non-technical trades with their own rank progression.
How to Join the Pakistan Air Force
The PAF inducts officers through several branches, advertised on the official joinpaf.gov.pk portal:
General Duty (Pilot): the flying branch — cadets train at the PAF Academy Asghar Khan in Risalpur. Aeronautical Engineering: for engineering graduates who maintain and develop aircraft systems. Air Defence, Administration and Special Duties, Logistics, Accounts and Legal branches take graduates from relevant disciplines. There are also inductions for airmen/airwomen in technical trades.
The selection process runs through PAF Information & Selection Centres across the country: initial academic and intelligence tests, medical examination, and then the Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) — the same four-day assessment used by the Army and Navy. Final selection is followed by training at Risalpur. Eligibility criteria (age, education, marital status, physical standards) change with each induction course, so always check the current advertisement on the official portal rather than relying on old information.
Why the PAF Matters
The PAF’s Regional Role
The PAF’s performance during the May 2025 conflict drew international attention to its pilot training standards and its integration of Chinese-origin platforms with Western ones — a mix few air forces operate. The service’s public disclosures in 2026 confirmed that near-term priorities are additional J-10CE fighters and upgraded JF-17 variants, with the fifth-generation J-35AE scoped for the early 2030s as older F-16 airframes age out.
This phased modernisation — 4.5-generation platforms now, stealth later — reflects both budget realities and operational need as Mirage and F-7 airframes retire. Read Quwa’s analysis of the PAF’s procurement plans for the detailed roadmap.
The PAF’s performance in the May 2025 conflict drew global attention to its training standards and integration of Chinese-origin platforms, and its ongoing modernisation — J-10Cs today, J-35s tomorrow — keeps it central to Pakistan’s defence posture. For aspirants, it remains one of the most competitive and prestigious career paths in the country.
