NAB Summons KP Lawmaker Dr Amjad Ali, Four Others in Assets Inquiry

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued five notices in an inquiry into alleged assets beyond known sources of income and suspected corruption, as NAB summons KP lawmaker Dr Amjad Ali to appear before the bureau in Peshawar today (Tuesday).

Dr Amjad Ali, a member of the provincial assembly and special assistant to the chief minister on housing, has been directed to present himself at NAB’s Hayatabad office in Peshawar. The bureau said the inquiry followed a formal complaint.

Four others summoned as witnesses between October 20 and 22

Besides the lawmaker, NAB has summoned four other people as witnesses in the same inquiry. Bacha Syed, Muhammad Arif Shah, Siraj Ahmad and Naveed Ahmad have been directed to appear before the bureau between October 20 and 22.

In its summons, the accountability watchdog warned that failure to comply with the notices could lead to legal action. Legal observers note that the latest NAB summons KP lawmaker notices will test the bureau’s compliance with the high court’s earlier directions.

Property records and salary details sought

As part of the probe in which NAB summons KP lawmaker Dr Amjad Ali, the bureau has sought property records from various housing societies, including details of allotments, ownership and payments made against plots and houses.

NAB has also written to the Accountant General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, asking for complete records of Dr Amjad Ali’s salary, allowances, benefits and travel expenses. Investigators will compare his declared income with the assets traced to him to determine whether they fall beyond his known sources of income.

Sources familiar with the inquiry say the bureau is comparing the lawmaker’s declared income with the assets traced to him. The allegations at this stage remain unproven; the inquiry is meant to establish facts before any reference is filed.

Peshawar High Court had barred harassment in March

The latest development comes against the backdrop of earlier court proceedings involving Dr Amjad Ali. In March 2026, the Peshawar High Court directed NAB not to harass him in connection with an assets case and disposed of his writ petition.

At that hearing, Ali’s counsel Bashir Wazir told the two-member bench his client had already provided his asset records to the bureau. He argued that NAB had issued another notice despite earlier court directions restricting repeated summonses, which he said amounted to harassment.

NAB special prosecutor Arbab Kaleemullah, however, told the court that no call-up notice had been issued to Ali himself at that time. Instead, he said, a female relative and a close associate of the lawmaker had been summoned as witnesses. The prosecutor said certain assets held in their names allegedly belonged to Ali but had not been declared.

The bench, comprising Justice Syed Arshad Ali and Justice Qazi Jawad Ehsanullah, directed NAB to proceed strictly in accordance with the law and refrain from harassing the petitioner. It also observed that Ali could file an appropriate application if he felt he was being harassed — an observation that may prove relevant now that NAB summons KP lawmaker Dr Amjad Ali again, this time with a direct call-up notice in his own name.

Wider NAB scrutiny of public funds in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The case in which NAB summons KP lawmaker Dr Amjad Ali is not the only accountability inquiry currently open in the province. In a separate development, NAB Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also summoned the former chief executive of the Sehat Sahulat Programme, Dr Muhammad Riaz Tanoli, over alleged financial irregularities amounting to Rs21 billion in the Sehat Card Plus programme.

In that inquiry, investigators are examining Rs12 billion allocated in 2023–24 and Rs9 billion disbursed between July 2025 and July 2026; Tanoli has been directed to appear before the Combined Investigation Team in Peshawar on October 29.

The parallel inquiries show how the NAB summons KP lawmaker case fits into a broader accountability push across the province, from health insurance funds to the asset declarations of elected representatives.

What happens next

With the NAB summons KP lawmaker notices now served, Dr Amjad Ali is expected to appear at the bureau’s Hayatabad office today, while the four witnesses will present themselves over the next two days. NAB officials have confirmed further investigations and hearings in the coming weeks.

The bureau has urged all named parties to cooperate fully. Whether the inquiry leads to a formal reference will depend on what the records — from housing societies, the Accountant General’s office and the witnesses — reveal.

For now, the lawmaker’s counsel maintains that asset records were already furnished and that repeated summonses amount to harassment — a claim the bureau disputes. The appearances over the next three days will determine the direction of one of the most closely watched accountability cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year.
